Apple TV and Pixar

I purchased an Apple TV today, and wanted to rent Ratatouille.

It wasn't available. The only option was to purchase for $14.99, and no HD. I checked all the other Pixar movies, same thing.

If Steve Jobs doesn't care enough about the Apple TV to sign up his former studio, and the studio he's the largest single shareholder of, how can I trust him to show commitment to Apple TV in the future? How do I know I won't have a useless box in a year?

This is going back tomorrow, and will be the first time I've ever returned an Apple product. Very dissapointed.
 
You do understand that Pixar movies are distributed by Disney right? Disney wont let any of there cartoons be rented. This has nothing to do with apple or Pixar unfortunately. Im sure if Steve could do it another way he would. But when you have distribution rights to a movie you call the shots.
 
Steve is a board member of Disney and the single largest shareholder. There are very few at that company more powerful than he is.

And Pixar films used to be available, given there are reviews of Apple TV HD quality using them as examples. So we are going backwards in content! You don't see that as a problem?
 
Being a stock holder of a company weather your the small guy with one share or the guy with 98% of the shares dosnt matter. It all comes down to a vote with them. If the majority of disney board members say no then thats how it goes. I'm sure Steve has thrown his weight around about the subject several times and has not had much luck getting them to budge. Disney has always been like this and always will be. As for the HD content I'm not to sure what's going on there. Again a call not made by apple or steve at this point. Always think of Disney as the ones with everything in the "Vault" they tend to lock up and release things every 10 years or so. They have also pulled back from HD as a format and gone on to using Blue Ray as the standard now after the format wars. I think after some time things will settle back down and HD will become the standard of how videos will be done digitally but until then we are at the whim of the studios not of Apple or of Steve.
 
Yup, Ratatouille was in fact the first HD rental I made on my Apple TV when the service was introduced last February. I have no idea when they pulled it, but this apparently is fairly common.

The irony here is that Apple featured Ratatouille prominently when it was promoting the new service prior to and after rollout, as evident in this article from Arstechnica.

BTW, here is a site that attempts to track which HD titles are available for rental on the ATV. Presently showing 436.

I think you are confused - HD is not the same as HD-DVD. Blu Ray and Hd DVD are both High Definition formats.
