Apple TV and VPN

Since i live outside of US i need to use AppleTV with VPN to watch movies through Netflix or Hulu.

What i have is

2010 Macbook Pro and Wireless Connection(I can not acccess router through ethernet)


Can you tell me what additional equipment(s) need to use AppleTV with VPN?

And can you explain how can i do that.

I don't think that would be a good idea, that type of traffic sending across the globe will degrade the quality by a lot (lag will be crazy) (not to mention that would be against the TOS as well)

However ATVpn does that if you are on the Original ATV

I dont think that it would be a problem with 20 mbit/s connection.If there will be some stutter i can pause it to buffer up for 2 minutes or sth.

It is not a bandwidth issues, that type oc connection won't be a point to point, it have to go through many servers, routers, networks and the PIng, lag and response times of those system are difference. You may have 20mBit/sec connection to your backbone, but after that is it a whole another world.

Ok you i got your point but if i pause the content it will buffer up right ? I am presuming that ATV has buffering ability ?

It does, but it is believe to work different from the buffer you see other netflix apps, Apple have been hited to buffer a lot of the content before start playing, so to do what you want to do may be a really crappy experience, your content may take long time to start up, and them it may get interrupted "alot" during playback by a long pauses. It gets bad here in the states at peak hours, i can only imaging what would be streaming it across the globe.

Don;t get me wrong, I am not trying to rain on your parade, I just really think that the juice in this case may no worth the squeeze.

While it is true that using a VPN to access services outside of your area will slow down your connection, depending on your own internet connection and the VPN service's connection/overhead/location, your end result could vary from great to horrible. Personally I use a VPN connection to use BBC iPlayer and it works flawlessly for me. So your best bet would be to try it out, and if it sucks, well then forget about it. I'd comment more, but while I've used VPNs for this reason, I've never used it in conjunction with ATV or netflix/hulu.

Loading VPN on a router is another option.

Get a router that is compatible with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware. Flash it to one of them. Then use OpenVPN to integrate it in your router. This way all of your computers that are connected to the router can access VPN.

I think disabling/enabling the VPN in the router is easy.
