I have finally upgraded to a modern AV receiver and have a question about using the ATV as an airtunes speaker when hooked up to the AVR.

If I hook up the ATV to the receiver via HDMI (with the receiver then to my TV via HDMI) is that sufficient to use the ATV for airtunes (streaming from my iTunes on my Macbook), or do I also need to hook the ATV to the receiver via optical audio (toslink)? In other words, will one HDMI connection suffice for using the ATV for both movies and iTunes audio?

Thanks for any advice!

Yup. That's all you need. I have my appletv hooked up just through HDMI and it works as an airtunes speaker.

Perfect! Thanks a lot. I only have two optical inputs on the receiver, so connecting the ATV by HDMI will let me keep them open for other purposes (one from the TV into the receiver to play my over-the-air HD audio, and one open to connect my Macbook for digital audio out if I want to use Plex).
