My father in law called me to tell me his aTV automatically erased today and all fo his music and photos were gone. After explaining to him that these things dont happen by themselves (it must have been his fault), I proceeded to walk him through the process of reconnecting the aTV to iTunes (it needed an update of course) and then re-syncing the content back onto the aTV.

Low and behold....I go to start MY aTV about 2 hrs later and voila! Its erased as well. I have had the aTV since day 1 and have helped dozens of friends and family hook thierss up too. Im pretty good at getting around the features fo the aTV. I have never seen this happen and for it to happen to two in one day must be related to some update. right?

Has anybody else had this happen to them today? or this week?

No.....

No an update has never erased or even reset my aTV. I would have thought it was just a fluke, except that it happened to both mine and my father in laws on the same day and its happened to neither of us before. Both aTV's were updated....perhaps it was arecent iTunes update that did it.
I see alot of peeps have read this post and not replied, so I will take that as meaning it was just us and not "all aTV's" that this happened to.

Im Scott, who are you???

Mine seemed to do this the other day. It got me wondering if the update to iTunes was the cause. I never did find out but I had to resync all my stuff and it took ages.

The only time mine gets erased is if itunes cannot find the original files to my music and movies (which can happen if you keep your itunes files on an external HD). Since Apple TV automatically syncs with itunes, if itunes can't find the file, then it gets erased from Apple TV until the file is found, at which point it gets put back onto the device when it re-syncs (of course this takes time though).

Mine's done it several times - I think there's another thread on here talking about it from a couple of months back.

Not eh case this time, but thanks for the imput. No changes to file locations were made....it just plain erased!

All is ok now. I was just curious.

mine deleted all the files i had bought on the appleTV the other night.

its packed up to go back to apple store today. that was the final straw.

Mine also erased. NOT user error. I lost a bunch. If I don't get a 100% refund for everything, I am reversing the fees on my American Express for the product and all the iTunes bills.

SAD... I started on apple. Built my first .com on a freakin performa 15 years ago! I am mad as hell at Apple for releasing something that was not ready for market. I see this happening frequently with them lately.

On another note... Everything on AppleTV in now available for free without it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Since the AppleTV only syncs with your iTunes library, you shouldn't have lost anything. It should all still be sitting in your iTunes library on your Mac/PC. Simply get the AppleTV re-synced with your library and it's all back.
