Apple TV, Classic and Handbrake Settings

I rip my DVD's to watch on my ATV2 and often will store them on my iPod Classic when traveling. I use a basic audio video cord to watch the movies on a TV straight from the classic, but they come out cropped and not in letterbox format. When I put the same movie on my iPhone it comes out in letterbox without cutting anything off when using the same cord. Is there anyway using handbrake setting or anything else to correct this? It'd be nice to be able to load a bunch of movies on the classic and not have the tv cut off much of the picture.
