Apple TV Disappears

My :apple:TV no longer shows up in my iTunes. I had some content synched. So I disconnected the :apple:TV from my iTunes, chose the library again, iTunes discovers the :apple:TV, try to type in the new password, then it disappears. It has happened a couple of times.

Why would it show up then disappear?

The iTunes Store comes up, I can watch trailers and everything. I have tried only streaming, I have factory restored. Nothing is working. Not even 1.1. Help would be appreciated.

I just got my TV and I love it but it keeps disappearing from itunes like yours does...i know this thread is older but there are no answers to it

its getting frustrating...i have software update 2.0.2

Mine does this ... as previous poster said, it's always because AppleTV has lost it's IP address - blaming my router for this one, must get a new one soon.

I used to have that problem with my old router. I have since got the Airport Extreme router. No problems since then.
 
I too used to have this problem with my old netgear router. It would lose the network connection periodically but only when connected wirelessly. With an ethernet connection I never had any problems.

I tried all sorts of different things (turning off security etc) but to no avail.

I recently purchased a time capsule and now connect the :apple:tv to this wirelessly. Never had any problems at all since then.
 
Same here

Just bought an :apple:TV yesterday. Setup started out OK... connected to my network (Airport Express, B/G) fine. It simply would not sync properly with iTunes.

It would appear in iTunes. I would enter the 5-digit code to pair the library / ATV. It would begin to sync, then freeze after one or two songs. I couldn't get it to go further than that.

Went through the reset / restart / resync process... no luck. I called apple tech support this AM... they were not very helpful.

Reading through the forums here and on apple.com, I think this is a software issue with 2.02. I'm simply going to return mine until they get it worked out. Life is too short to deal with stuff like this.

Well My Apple Tv Continues To Go In And Out...it Will Sync For A While But Then It Will Disappear...and Since My Itunes Library Is Rather Large...it Takes A Lot Of Time To Sync

I Have An Airport Extreme Wireless "n" So I Dont Think It Is My Router...i Seem To Agree With The Person That Says It Has To Do With The 2.0.2 Software Update...and Since I Never Had The Earlier Versions...then I Dont Know If It Is It?

Well If Anyone Knows If It Is Definitely The 2.0.2 Software Let Me Know...thank You Guys For All The Feedback/replys To This Post

I have had this problem off/on with various firmware updates. When I initial got my ATV, wireless sync would fail (disconnect/disappear from itunes) after syncing 6-7 songs. (WinXP itunes host) After the update to 2.0.0 update, the wireless sync started working and things were great ... 2.0.1 the same, then with 2.0.2 wireless sync was broken with the WinXP PC, but still working for wireless sync to my Mac Mini. I purchased an external FW400 drive housing and moved my 600GB of movies to the Mac Mini at that point.

In general, the sync protocol being used between ATV and the iTunes host is very flakey and is the weakest element of the system. I have a LinkSys WAP54G with modded fireware that works great for everything else. The fact that people report this problem with Airport base stations tells me that this is mainly a software reliability issue, not a network hardware issue.

it Has To Be The Software Update...because Its Not My Network...its Not My Macs...

cuz They Work Flawlessly All This Time...and It Was Working Fine B4 I Did The Update To 2.0.2...which I Had No Idea That It Was Updating To That...

i Just Did The Software Update...and That Is What It Gave Me...so Im At A Loss As To What I Need To Do To Keep This Connection...besides Being Scared To Touch My Itunes While It Is In The Device List...

Oh dear, Apple TV has disappeared from my iTunes too. Never had a problem until the last week, it always worked perfectly, but nothing I do now gets it back - I've restarted iTunes, unplugged the Apple TV and started up again, unplugged my Airport Extreme and started up again, etc, etc.....no joy.

Has anyone had any success solving this problem?

I just bought an tv yesterday. I can stream items from my iTunes relatively perfectly and I can perform other network required functions like viewing flickr photos, youtube, etc. It's just the syncing and recognition.

tv only likes to show up in my devices on iTunes when I am trying to connect to iTunes or add a Shared Library in tv. And even then it disappears after about a minute or so. And this was just purchased yesterday, mind you - 9/18/08 . I do live in a dormitory so it may be a networking problem here, but if you guys are having the same problem, and these people too then perhaps it is not us and it really is a firmware problem.

I hope someone figures this out, especially Apple.

This was my solution as well. I had constant problems with the Apple TV disappearing from itunes, extremly slow sync, not connecting with my itunes library. I tried several different solutions (restoring older firmware, moving linksys router closer to Apple TV) but nothing worked. I then changed out my Linksys G router to an Airport Extreme N router and all the problems went away. The sync speeds are now extremly fast.

My appleTV disappears too

My AppleTv (Take 2, ssh and Perian enabled) disappears from my network every 24-48 hours. I can re-enter all the wireless information (hidden network, personal wpa2 key) and it'll rejoin, but it's far easier to yank the plug and plug it back in. I don't use the network on the thing more than once every week or two; I load it up with content, and it takes a while to consume 40GB of stuff. The most frustrating is when I'm streaming mp3s to it when it falls off. I've got it on a 802.11n network, with reverse compatibility to g (because of the Wii and the Wife's iPhone), served by our Time Capsule. I don't recall if interference robustness is turned on or not.

I'm equally tempted to bitch about the Time Capsule as I am to run a wire through the wall (it's a straight shot) and provide wired network to the entertainment center. But I've got two kids, 2 and 4 years old, so spare time for any diagnosis is very slim.
 
apple tv chronically disappears from my itunes especially after I turn off my imac (or even close itunes for an extended period of time).

My workaround has been to leave itunes open and never shut down the machine.

not ideal.
 
My tv has the latest updates. As far as USB patches, I wouldn't know anything about that or USB connections with the tv to something else because I haven't use it. I would like to note however that this problems is only in reference to the wireless syncing capabilities for me. When syncing using ethernet connections things work quite smoothly. I guess for the mean time that will have to suffice since I technically don't need to sync wirelessly 24/7. However, it definitely seems like how it's advertised. But yeah, I'm 100% sure it's a router issue, but for the moment since I do not have a Time Machine and rely on my internet through my university's wireless/ethernet system, I'm stuck with having to sync with a wired connection. Oh well.
 
Mine does this, too, but it re-appears after a while. I'm guessing that the :apple:TV sleeps then wakes up periodically and pings for iTunes running on my iMac. No problems when actually using it to watch stuff on TV, though...

If you have a computer connected to the internet, and want to share that internet with the :apple:TV with a wired connection, don't use a crossover cable. Do this:

Open sharing in system preferences. Turn on internet sharing, and share through the ethernet port. Turn on "personal web sharing" in the services tab. Connect the :apple:TV directly to the computer with a regular ethernet cable, not a crossover cable. Check the :apple:TV network settings and you should see the device is connected to the internet via a wired connection. Now open iTunes, and the :apple:TV should show up and start syncing. I do this when I have problems syncing wirelessly and it works for me. Not the most elegant solution.

I would do this, but I'm at a college dorm that doesn't allow the ATV on the network, and I'm afraid that if I share the internet connection that I'd be violating the network rules (not sure if they'd be able to find out anyway). But the crossover cable is the easier solution for me, because I don't rent/purchase off the ATV and therefore don't need an internet connection.

I was mainly curious/concerned as to why the device would show up as a remote speaker in iTunes (allowing music streaming), but not in the devices panel (allowing video streaming).
 
Bump

This is what I'm currently seeing. ATV hasn't shown up in the devices column in days, even though it's connected as a remote speaker. Can't get iTunes to recognize the ATV as a device despite numerous attempts at restarting/resyncing/etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That may work for folks using an internet connection to connect to the ATV.

I'm using a crossover cable w/o an internet connection. Always worked with iTunes 7, hasn't been as reliable with iTunes 8. It's not a wire connection problem, because I can get a remote speaker connection fine.

Any advice for my situation?
