OK. Now I've been messing around with this for the last hour or so and I discovered that the movies DO NOT jerk when they are played on the PC or MAC locally...only when synched (not streamed) on the ATV. Is it possible that when the ATV HDD gets too full it runs slower causing videos to "jerk" or "skip"?? Or has my ATV got wierd on me?

I've removed all of my videos off the ATV at the moment and am currently syncing a movie that definately skipped before so that it is the only file on the ATV. If this runs smooth then I reckon I have a problem with my ATV when it fills up. Have you guys hit the 160GB mark yet? I think I was up to 148GB or something.

This is kind of what I was expecting... Big question: Are the files that are "jerking" and/or "skipping" synced to the ATV, or are they streaming?

If streaming, try and sync one file that jerks normally, and see if it still jerks. If not, your issue could be a bandwidth problem.

Nevermind!!!! I simply changed the video output on the ATV to 1080i rather than 720i and every film runs perfectly!!!

It's a good policy, if you have a decent 720 HDTV (good brand, not bottom of the barrel), to simply set your AppleTV to the highest quality (1080p) output possible and let your TV decode the signal down. The TV's decoder is high quality and will be less likely to degrade the quality of the image.

Based on my experience, I would never turn the AppleTV off of the highest setting, regardless of your (high quality) HDTV's resolution.

I was pretty sure I had but I guess not!! Thanks a lot for the help though guys, really apprecieated it!

Im having a similar problem - however this is with playback on my Mac rather than an Apple TV. I have started ripping The Wire (HBO TV Show) and I have got files that playback with a jerky picture and the sound is slightly out of sync. I have used the following settings in handbrake:

iPod Hi-Rez (640 x 480)
Framerate - same as source
Bitrate - 1200kbps
Deinterlace - slow

I think it might be something to do with the deinterlacing because other shows that I have ripped (that didnt need deinterlacing) have been perfect. Anyone have any idea on how to stop the jerking picture and sound sync problems when deinterlacing - for example using the 'slower' deinterlace setting or is it best to try another program altogether e.g. Visual Hub?
