Apple TV, iPhone and Droid

Does the Apple TV need to be (wirelessly) connected to a router to stream video from an iPhone 4 or Droid? Is there a device (like Google TV) that can do it without the router?

If you have wifi tether on the Droid (if it's 2.2), you can use that as the Router...

It is a Droid X so I would think it is the latest update. That is my wife's phone so I am not sure. I want to take a TV camping and stream video in an area where there is no 3G signal or wifi. So if I have the Apple TV, I can stream video from my iPhone 4 through the Droid X's tethered wifi? That would work for me!

It would probably be easier to take a router. As long as the ATV and laptop are networked, it will stream. iPhone 4 cannot stream to AppleTV yet, as Airplay isn't out.
