When I select 1080p output on my Apple TV, the picture and sound cutout. It used to be that I could unplug the unit and plug it back in and it would work fine for a few days. Now with the 3.0 software, it is unwatchable in 1080p. If i switch it to 720p it works fine. I did a factory reset with no effect.

My receiver shows the hdmi signal is being interrupted in 1080p but is steady on 720p. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a handshaking issue between the Apple TV and your receiver. Have you tried another cable to test if that is the problem? It could also be a bug in the 3.0 software. Is there a reason you don't wish to use 720p? There is no 1080p content for Apple TV anyway, it can't handle it. All it's doing is scaling the picture.

Maybe its my imagination but i thought the scaled 1080p looked a little crisper than the 720p.

Do hdmi cables go bad? It"s the same one I have used since I got the Apple TV 18 months ago.

I can attest to the differing quality of cables. I have some that add "static" to the picture or caused issues with my Denon receiver. A quick cable purchase from Monoprice fixed my issues. Well that, and one of these for connecting longer runs - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P731XQ/ - despite the reviews, it worked like a charm for me.

For future reference, Monoprice cables are just as good at 1/20th the price (or more).
