Hello everyone..
I have alot of movies that I purchased on CD.
I use handbrake to rip them so I can have them on my itunes and transfer them to my apple TV.
here is my question.
when I rip them I use the Apple TV settings. after it's done, I use itunes to convert the same movie to iphone version so I can watch them on my iphone..

Now I have two versions of the same movie on my itunes. is this the way its done? is there another setting on handbrake that I can rip to use for both apple tv and iphone.

any ideas ?
Thanks,
Sensei

The Apple Universal preset in Handbrake should do this for you, one file that will work on :apple:TV and iPhone, but it's a bigger file than one that has been converted using Handbrakes iPhone & iPod preset, about twice the size IIRC, so you won't get as many films on your iPhone.

I save a seperate iPhone/iPod version and change it from a 'Movie' to a 'TV Show', in a TV series I've called "iPod Touch Movies" so it doesn't show up as a load of duplicates in the movies section of iTunes or :apple:TV.

EDIT: Another option would be to use Handbrake to convert first using the :apple:TV preset, then add to the queue to convert using the iPhone & iPod Touch preset. This'll make nboth versions for you without further intervention, just make sure the second conversion has a different file name.

How does itunes label its movies...

I have a follow up question about that... how does itunes label its HD purchases... because they have two files; one in SD and one in HD; and they are listed once in itunes. And the apple TV plays the HD version, and the iphone/touch plays the SD version. What needs to be done for this to happen manually? This means a lot more space, but it means the best of both worlds when playing back the movies on any device.

Possibly SD/HD is one of the metadata options in MetaX ? I don't remember seeing it though (haven't looked TBH, all my stuff is SD), but some of mine have come up saying HD after I've imported the details into MetaX from TagChimp.

These are great ideas, thanks. it was a pain to have two movies in itunes. I will use your second option and have my iphone versions moved to tv shows.
thanks again...
