It would be great not to have to store locally the movies we buy through itunes, they will then be available to watch indefinitely whenever we want, apple store will keep track of all the movies we buy through our account username and give as indefinite access to them. what do you guys think?

I don't think that would interest me in the long term. For the same reason I couldn't go with Rhapsody by itself for my music, I want to know that I own it and have it on my hard drive.

What if your hard drive fail, you would lose all your movies, you will then have to pay for them again, on the other hand if itunes gives you access to all your paid movies you would be able to watch them wherever you are by logging in to your account.

While a little off topic / thread jack ....

I want a monthly service plan similar to netflix with the appletv. IE 15/month entitles you to 2 movies a week or something ....

I don't see that happening soon.

As far as what your concerned with .. can't you re-download content you have already bought if you delete it? I thought you could with music. Maybe I am mistaken.

Probably not a feature because bandwidth costs money. Imagine having to download a movie every time you want to watch it: Apple's bandwidth needs would multiply from what they are today. Who pays for that bandwidth? If you're not buying the movie again, you certainly don't.

Looking at it from that prism, I do think that Apple should offer a recovery option where if you absolutely needed to redownload your purchased library, you could pay a modest price for the service that would cover the bandwidth costs.

No you would not lose all your movies, you would have them on your Time Machine backup drive. In the event you did somehow lose everything, you could go it iTunes SUPPORT and file a request for assistance telling them what happened. Then magically one day not long after the request your computer will start downloading EVERYTHING all over again!!!!

Trust me, I know. I inadvertently DELELTED some unwatched items that were not backed up and contacted Apple iTunes Support. Turned on my computer and fired up iTunes and it started downloading over 120 items!:eek::eek:

Lesson Learned - BACKUP EVERYTHING - for me Time Machine was well worth the cost of Leopard !!!!!!!

I would like to see volume control for the Apple TV. I just don't understand why this would be that hard.

Ditto on the "you should back up your stuff" message. As people's lives become more and more digital (movies, TV shows, music, photos, etc, etc), people are really going to regret it when their HD smokes and it's all gone.

As far as letting someone else 'hold' content I've purchased: I'm already uneasy enough as it is that so much stuff that I have paid money for and, in some way or another, own exists solely as an intangible download, even if it is on my own hard drive(s). I would much rather have something durable to show for my money spent, like you get with a CD or DVD (or, for that matter, a book!). I know that you can back stuff up to home-burnt CD or DVD, but even that has a shelf life.

What happens if, knock wood, Apple goes out of business or shuts down the ITMS (in some form or another that will happen someday -- nothing lasts forever), and takes all 'your' stuff with it?

A good compromise might be like a lease, where you pay a price that's somewhere between renting and purchasing and you can have unlimited on-demand access. Probably not enough people would go for it to make it worthwhile, though.

But your volume is controlled by your TV, not the :apple:TV. The :apple:TV is just a signal source like your DVD player (or VCR, etc), which doesn't have a volume control either.

my DVD player (not a surround sound model) has a volume control separate from the TV. Granted, it's an old DVD player, so this may not be a feature anymore.

Yeah this is true and its one of biggest problems with iTunes (regardless of being able to contact customer service and possibly getting a download). Play.com (uk/music only at the mo) actually advertise that you can re-download your music if you lose it or a file corrupts etc. Apple really need to push the music/film/tv companies to allow them to incorporate this sort of feature in iTunes.
