This is my first post to this forum and am hoping to tap some real genius. As I am at a complete loss. Here is my problem

I have an apple tv running the latest software that refuses to sync with itunes 9.2. The ATV shows up under the devices tab in itunes and will connect with my home network fine but when I hit the button to sync music/photos/etc. the sync icon will spin for approximately one second then it will do nothing. I tried streaming the content, no luck there either. I have done the following with no success:

1. The ATV was taken to the apple store and replaced with a refurbed one. I told the Genius people the same story and they concluded that it was a hardware thing.
2. I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes several times
3. I have done a factory restore on the ATV several times
4. I have a windows vista machine and thought it may be a Vista thing so I did a restore to a previous time when it was working to no avail.
5. I tried to plug the ATV directly into the computer via a Ethernet cable, no dice.
6. I tried beating my head on the table...no luck there either.

I can still rent movies and buy content but it will not transfer it back to the computer.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what type of router are you using.... i think this may be an issue with the wireless routers firewall. Have you done any firmware upgrades as of late with the router? A great way to test is to directly connect the apple tv with an ethernet cable to your computer and then attempt to sync. You can try resetting the router and re-configuring ..(PS if it is a Linksys WRT54G, consider replacing if you dont want to fight this fight all the time, possibly with an airport extreme)

Also you mentioned you are using windows vista (yuck...LOL). I would take a look at your firewall settings there as well.. If Bonjour (apple's protocol for syncing and finding devices) is being blocked by your firewall/antivirus program then you wont be able to sync. Look for something in the firewall that uses UDP port 5353

Finally if all else fails, COMPLETELY UNINSTALL and REINSTALL itunes... that will re-install bonjour and might resolve the issue for you.. Tell me if these steps help...

I have tried your other suggestions. I even uninstalled bonjor individually and then reinstalled it. No luck. Unistalling and reinstalling iTunes did not work either. I have configured my firewall about 10 different ways with no luck. I do actually have the link sys router that you mentioned and I would be inclined to agree that it is a bad router. But I installed itunes on my wife's laptop (xp computer) and then connected apple tv as though it were a new device and it synced fine using her computer with the link sys router.

I will try configuring the firewall with bonjour which was a good suggestion I have opened a port for iTunes but not for bonjour. I am going to try the new 9.2.1 to see if it was an itunes thing? Anyway I am still at a loss. I am so close to buy a iMac and a time machine and ditching the pc...any other suggestions?

Thanks

Known Problem

This is a known problem that seems to pop up.

I think that it started for me when I bought something on my AppleTV that had the extras.

From that point on, it would not synch that (or any) content back to my computer.

My solution to the problem was to flash it so that I could get system access and then FTP the content back to my computer myself.
