So I had an older airport express w/ itunes. Couldn't update it to the latest 6.3 firmware, so I sold it as is. I need to stream music to my stereo again. I see the latest ones are $99. But I'm think about spending an additional $50 and get a refurb'd 40GB Appletv. Will do what I need and much more. Thoughts?

Apple TV or Airport Express?

If you don't need the Express to act as a wds (repeater for your wireless network) then Apple TV no brainer. Especially using an iphone or a Touch as a remote. Also your Mac won't need to be powered on to listen, although you will need to have your tv on. One more bonus is internet radio was added to apple tv so, the advantages of using an Express vs Appletv have narrowed or been eliminated entirely. Plus you have opened up the possibility of downloading movies and tv shows from your couch.
Forgot to mention. No need for it to act as a WDS. Used my old one for music streaming only. I'm thinking the same. No brainer. Grab an Apple TV.

Yea with ease of encoding blu-rays to a AppleTV format its a bargain IMO. I've had mine since they first came out and still love it.

Old Saint Nick is shopping for a video server, mostly for movies from my ITunes Library to be played through my home theater system. AppleTV looks great but am concerned with storage limitations, however a mini would offer more flexibility. My goal would be to rip my DVD library; 500 plus, and have it available via the server (AppleTV/Mini). I suppose I could network my MacPro and AppleTV and run everything from iTunes? Suggestions would be appreciated.

You have to run everything through iTunes. That is what AppleTV is based off of - iTunes running on a home computer. So yes, networking the MacPro and using it as the primary storage hub is the right solution. The AppleTV can hold 40GB or 160GB (depending on the model you buy). You could upgrade the drive yourself to 250GB or 320GB if you like. However, you could just load onto the AppleTV the videos you will need when you need them.
Thanks Paduck. ATV up and running and networking through my MacPro. Is there a file size limitation for ATV. Looks like some movies don 't synch although they run fine on the MacProt ? Great piece of gear and we having fun with it.
Or just stream everything from your Pro and not worry about the internal drive at all.
I don't sync any content to my AppleTV.

No patch.
Go to your AppleTV in iTunes and click off automatic syncing. This will write nothing to your ATV drive....well I'm sure it writes something, but no media files are copied over with this clicked-off.
EDIT: You need to do this within every category: movies, music, podcasts...etc., then click Sync on the bottom right hand corner to essentially save the changes.
Can't wait any longer. I need itunes to my main system in the house. Xbox 360 with connect360 is okay. Don't like the interface. I can get a 160GB ATV for $211 after my EPP discount.
