I have a ps3 but thinkin of getting an apple tv

whats your guys opinions

which is better, which one do you think has the ;ongest lifespan, better investment

They are completely different and would be impossible to rate. Usually, when you compare something, they have similar function and you rate the pro's and con's.

A apple TV = media center
PS3 = gaming console

Yes, the PS3 can do some media stuff, but if you buy a PS3 specifically for it being a media center.. then well...

Do what I did and buy both.. :D

But seriously they serve completely different purposes. The PS3 is a great machine and the ATV leaves a little bit to be desired. I have a feeling the next ATV release will be the ATV that we've all been waiting for. So if you can only buy one and want it now, go with the PS3. But, if you want both, I'd buy the PS3 now and wait for the next ATV. Just my 2 cents.. :)

Both of these can serve as media centers so the question isn't crazy. I would go with a PS3 personally. Popping in a blu-ray movie is a lot more simple with better quality than anything the Apple Tv will offer you. The Apple TV has more rental features though and if you are accustomed to converting your films to 1's and 0's then an Apple Tv will probably offer a smoother experience. The PS3 if you spend the time to configure everything will do everything the Apple TV does but more, just not as nice a GUI though.

If boxee can run on the PS3, then it's a slam dunk: media center, blue-ray, gaming console. Wow.

I have AppleTV, and run boxee on it. Absolutely love it, although I feel it a bit underpowered sometimes, especially when I'm watching a DivX movie and downloading a torrent in the background at the same time.

i agree here. i have a ps3, and am waiting on the next atv

Ever since I got a PS3 I stopped using my Apple TV for anything.

Except movie rentals, but Blockbuster is cheaper when you have the time. You can't put a price on convenience, though.

Yea i use hadbrake but i meant what resolutions and bitrates, is the ps3 preset best for ps3 and apple tv.

Yeah the ps3 has me kind of thinking,

u can upgrade the hdd ur self, playback all kinds of video files, plus blu-ray, dvd, and games,

has internet and i hear you can get hulu through its browser what netflix through the browser

Few things to think about though.

1. Streaming mp4/m4v will be a headache on the PS3 - I just spent a day working on different encoded videos with no success.
2. No pretty cover art or info for the movie on the PS3
3. To stream you will need a 3rd party software.

My questions for ps3 users?

1) does it support cover art for movies?
2) how do you control it? With your gamepad? or do you have an IR remote ?
(I can't imagine the gamepad goes well with the ladies)
3) Is the menu system easy to manuver?
4) What are you using to get this done? I tried various programs, but I cant get any of them to work on my mac.. no cover art either

Mo

on the ps3 theres no info or cover art unless u purchase it from the ps3 store,

u can add your own mps or avis to the ps3s hdd

u can use the game pad or the ps3 bluetooth remote

pretty much. if you have a PC you can stream from 'Media Center' but... idk IMO the ATV (if you install Boxee) is the winner by far.

i think to date, boxee is the best (free) application for home theatre. and since you can install it on the ATV.... what could be better?

i know i know... some love Plex.

I use a ps3 for playing media back. I've always ripped DVD's and used handbrake to convert them to the appleTV preset. Then they are compatible with ps3, ATV, xbox 360. Pretty universal. Rather than streaming, I have a 160 gb FAT32 portable drive that I keep everything on in folders. Its organized and easy to find whatever I want. And I don't need to worry about my laptop going to sleep or using streaming software.

However, if you do want to stream from your mac, I would suggest Rivet. It will stream to the ps3 and xbox 360 at the same time. And it runs in the menubar so its out of sight.

I have an :apple:TV, and since I have a Samsung BluRay player that streams Netflix and Pandora I haven't touched the :apple:TV.

i don't blame ya haha - but keep in mind you payed a good amount for the blue ray player, and a good amount for blue ray discs, and you are paying per month for netflix (even if it is watch instantly).

the OP could use the mac mini and watch hulu - along with other very very popular shows on comedy central for FREE

that's what i do :)
