I have been waiting and searching for a set top box that would allow me to record OTA HDTV broadcasts. The key is that I do NOT have cable. I do not have a dish. And I do not want either. It seems all the set top boxes I can find out there are only available via some service contract (incl. TiVo). I don't want another monthly bill. I just want to pay for what I want.

I don't watch a whole lot of TV. But, what I do watch is mainly broadcast. With the switch to digital, I've lost the ability to record anything.

Apple TV would seem like a close solution for me... buy it once, and just pay for content you want... But, with no tuner, it simply doesn't do what I want. What I'm really looking for is something like a TiVo, but that works for OTA only (content from the internet is just a bonus).

Actually, the best solution I've found is (gag) windows media player, with a tuner in my windows laptop. But, it's very clunky.

Is there any chance I can configure Apple TV to work like I want? or am I really mis-reading the concept here?

If you are only looking for an over-the-air HD-DVR, then check out the DTVPAL from Echostar. It is a one time purchase price ($299?) and no monthly fee.

It is available at sears:

Thanks! Not sure how in the world I missed this if it came out in 2008. I have been searching forever, posting to forums, etc. etc etc... Though, not in the past ~6 months or so.
