I am going to be in the market to either buy a $99 Apple TV or the "classic" for $149. For right now, I will use it to stream Itunes to my family room sound system but I was wondering if the classic Apple TV has many 3rd party apps that gives it a lot more flexibility and/or potential to be a media center.. ALso, other than this forum, is there some other sites that have information about Mac home media or the Apple TV.

Yes, I'm a newbie and any help would be appreciated.

I second this. aTV flash is amazing. The primary reason I bought it was to hook a 1TB external drive up to it. Works like a charm.

aTV also allows you to play other movie formats and there are many other extras that I haven't looked at yet. (I believe you can access boxee through it as an example of one.)

From the forums, I have heard you can do all of this yourself with patchstick if you somewhat technically inclined and have the time.
