What are the odds that Apple will ever release an Apple TV that can also replace my Tivo?

That's what I keep hoping for!

In my view, very small. Apple think the future for media consumption is streaming. Not buying physical media, not receiving it solely via broadcasts that the provider dictates the schedule for, not requiring different broadcast equipment and technologies that are not standardised across all markets. In an on demand world, you don't need to timeshift anything. We're a way off that yet, but it we're headed that way already with the multitude of catch up services and live feeds available via the Internet.

Apple want the content on the cloud, not on your local storage, your best bet is to have a HTPC (and you can still use ATV if you want, with something like Plex or XBMC). You can have them nowadays really small and not that expensive (for ~$500 you can get a nice 3D Bluray capable one with plenty of storage).
