As per the conference call: still a hobby, but will continue to invest in it.

That's good enough for me. I love the Apple TV...it's been one of my favorite Apple products since it was first announced. I don't mind it still being called a hobby anymore because Apple is clearly still investing in it well given that it not runs iOS.

Thoughts?

It will be a hobby until Steve says otherwise at a keynote. They aren't going to tip their hat.

But I do have modest expectations for September. At most, I think we'll get an A5 1080p Apple TV 3. An Apple TV App Store would also be a very nice addition although I'm not sure it will happen yet.

I feel the same way. Doubt we are getting an App Store yet, largely because the current model only has 8 gigs in it.

But within 2 years I see it as a possibility.

The 1080p Apple TV could definitely come this September.

It wasn't considered a hobby at the beginning; that term only came around after the initial product was deemed a failure and they had to find a way to save face. It's been so long now that it's been a lightweight product that no one remembers the time when it wasn't a "hobby." How easily people forget...

maybe I'm wrong, but didn't Apple say the AppleTV 2 was no longer a hobby?

I own two of them because I love it. But I have to say I'm disappointed in the lack of innovation on it and I hate that the Apple community so easily accept them saying "It's just a hobby" to be a legitimate excuse because if this really is a hobby then they shouldn't care if we want to plug in a hard drive to add local content. This is an iOS device so we really shouldn't keep making excuses for why we don't have apps or popular streaming services like Hulu on it. (Yes, I've tried AirPlay Mirroring and it's not the same as actually having an app built for the aTV)

It does run iOS, just the interface looks different.

Given they state that they don't see the market being there for developing the :apple:TV i don't see another :apple:TV device coming anytime soon.

That being said there wasn't a market for tablets 2 years ago before they decided to create it and release the iPad.

It's a hobby because nerds like us post in this sub forum. People who rip their own movies and tag them and etc....

If apple didn't let us use our own files, then the hobby would be dead.

If the movie industry allowed Apple to let iTunes users rip their own DVDs, then this would be huge and not a hobby. In that case, the average consumer would rip all their DVDs to iTunes like they do/did their CDs. The movie industry fears that so much that they would no longer allow Apple to sell/rent movies and TV shows.

REAL tried to do a DVD ripping app that locked the movies to the PC that ripped them. They lost against the movie industry and the software was never released.

In a pure business strategy, it's better for apple to turn a blind eye to us in the sub forum than to piss off Hollywood.

To the guy who said apple only said it was a hobby to save face...

I wonder how the sales have compared to roku, WDTV ( I own 2 ), Seagate and all the others selling these type of boxes. It's a specialized market and I would bet that the AppleTV is in the top 2 or3 in volume.

Update
If I recall, the AppleTV and roku were battling for number one awhile back.

Which company has a similar media device, $99 or less that is not a hobby? Most aren't selling in volume to the mainstream consumers.

What are your thoughts?
