Hello, peeps, I would like to know If I can and how if possible to be able to watch my own movies thru apple tv, or am I stuck only being able to rent and buy from iTunes?

Apple TV is an iPod for your TV. Lets you stream your movies and shows. The movies have to be part of your iTunes library and iTunes and your computer have to run.
There are some restrictions about quality and codecs as well (see apple.com and check the Apple TV specs).

For anything else you have to modify it....

HandBrake is your friend here...

I am using HandBrake to encode all of my DVD's that I have and get them off the shelf. I also used iTubes to add all of my CD's into my digital library in iTunes. Now, I can stream everything to my TV to either watch or listen to. They are now in a case so they can be used only in my Expedition. I got rid of my DVD player as well. I am obviously keeping the "hard copy" just in case of the worst.

As long as they are in a supported format then yes. Otherwise you would have to reencode them with something like Handbrake.

Your AppleTV will play any movie you want, not just those off of iTunes. The only stipulation is is that it has to be in a format that Apple TV plays such as MP4.

If you have a collection of 200 movies all in AVI then you will need to batch convert them using handbrake and then you will be able to drag them into iTunes and watch them on your Apple TV.
