i know this is stupid but is it possible to download the movies from itunes on my imac and send them to my appletv and then delete them from my mac? i dont want all the movies cluttering up my computer. i only realize this because i bought a episode of top gear ((i love it)) last night on apple tv and it transfered it over to my mac. i dont want that, i want to leave it on apple tv.

is there anythign that i can do to make it like that?

thank you very much

Unfortunately, the appletv is a syncing device EXACTLY like your ipod. So whatever goes on one appears ont the other. If you are willing to hack you appletv you can keep files only on the atv, however, I'm not sure if that works for DRM'ed iTunes files. In any case this exact same question has be asked and answered numerous times in this forum. I'm certain a quick search will turn up some great info on what your various options are and exactly how to go about them.

I'd argue that you DO want a backup, especially when Apple TV is designed to wipe its hard drive clean if synched with a different library.

Hard drive space is cheap, though. You can get a 500 GB hard drive for about $60 ($80 if you're going external), and that will likely let you store all the movies and music you'll want for awhile anyway.

Actually, this is doable -- but only if you stop your AppleTV from syncing after you delete the files from your Mac, which sort of defeats the purpose.

The other alternative is to buy something directly from your ATV, and then not sync it back to your Mac, but, again, that would leave you without a backup.

If it's that big of a deal to you, buy an external drive to hold your media.
