This question relates to only sync function of apple tv. I know I can sync or stream, but I usually only sync, since I don't have all that much content.

What I want to do, is to take ripped back up copies of my DVDs and "store" (and view as well of course) these files on my apple tv. So, as you would expect, I rip them, place them into iTunes and sync. Works great. But I don't want to keep copies on my computer (ie iTunes). I don't want to store two copies...one on my computer and one on my apple tv.

How can I get these files written to my apple tv hard drive and then take them out of iTunes? It seems like a waste of hard drive space to have them in my computer. Plus I really don't want my computer all filled up with movies...I need the space for other things.

Can it be done?

Hmm, I'll try and take a stab at this.

I'm guessing syncing with the AppleTV is alot like syncing with an iPod or iPhone (I only stream with my AppleTV, so I'm not sure).

If you sync a movie with AppleTV and then delete it from your iTunes library, it should remain on your AppleTV (if it acts as an iPod or iPhone). But, if you ever want to put another movie on your AppleTV and you do another sync, you'll lose the first movie.

There might be an option to manage music and movies manually on the AppleTV which should help you for what you want, I'm not sure though, don't have my iMac infront of me to check.

However, the idea seems dangerous, if you ever have to upgrade your AppleTV or are forced to do a sync afterwards, you could lose everything.

This is one of the major drawbacks of iTunes and ATV. The only way you can free up the space on your Mac is to transfer the iTunes content to an external HDD and point iTunes and the ATV to that either via USB from the Mac or via a NAS drive on your network.
