Apple TV syncing problems

I hooked my AppleTV 40GB up to my HD TV.

When I put it to streaming and I try to watch a movie, it keeps buffering 'forever' and just won't start. TV Shows and music videos DO start playing though ... (maybe I'm not waiting long enough for a movie to fully load/buffer)


When I put it to sync, it just won't sync my movies and tv shows. Music and photos are being synced, but that's not why I bought the device of course.


P.S. streaming from my macbook (sig) and movies/tv shows/music videos are on my external 1TB firewire drive.

How are they networked? Sounds like just a really slow connection. If you are using wireless, is it N? Can you connect it via Ethernet (at least temporarily) to see if that solves the problem? If not, you can try repositioning the wireless router to see if that helps.

It's a pretty old router. So you're positive that's causing the problem?

Let's say we get a 1TB Time Capsule ... Can you use that as a router? Because it has airport extreme built-in?

Assuming it is your router, then the Airport Express would work perfectly. I stream wirelessly over a G network flawlessly, never mind an N network.

You aren't using the external hard drive for anything else? Like copying other stuff to it while you were attempting to stream from it?

1) I went to take a look at my modem/router and this is what I came up with.
Mind you, I don't know ANYTHING about routers/modems/etc ... My dad takes care of all those things and I'm happy if I can get internet.

So, the model is Aethra FS4014-AW.
Here a PDF file that explains everything about this device. (For the people checking this out: is this the model or the router or both in one?)

Should that be fast enough for wireless streaming between my MacBook and my aTV?



2) The entire iTunes Library is on this external drive (connected with Firewire 400). (Music, TV Shows, Movies are all on there)

Does that have anything to do with it?

well, according to the manual you posted it has b/g wireless networking built in so it should be OK. However, a lot of factors could be effecting wireless performance. Do you have anything else connected to the router wirelessly? Are they working fine? The frequency it uses could have some interference. You could try one of the other channels.

If possible, temporarily connecting the apple TV via either net would help with the trouble shooting. If it works fine then you know the problem is with the wireless networking.

1) Also connected:
My dad's PC (not wireless)
The Bancontact system in my parents' store. (to pay with your creditcard etc)
A wireless clocking system connected to a finger print scanner to register how late employees arrive.
