I have an ATV2 but my only mac is a macbook air I use mainly for work. I've ripped a few movies to put on my iPad for travel and have been thinking of ripping more for use at home. I don't want to buy another mac and I don't want to load up my macbook air hard drive.

I was wondering if it was possible to use a time capsule as a media server for an ATV. I'm guessing no, since it's not running iTunes, but is there anyway to store and stream video files to an ATV without a computer?

You can stream from your time capsule if your appletv is jail broken.
Works well with aTV flash.

No you can't use Timecapsule for that.

Yes there is a way, but you will need to have your ATV jailbroken (ATV can't read from NAS device by default, only iTunes which will required a computer) and you will need a NAS device attached to your Router.

Once you are Jailbroken you can use Mplayer, PLex, XBMC or the default ATVFlash media reader.

I would be willing to jailbreak it, especially since I could use safari on it then, correct?

I use anonymizer universal VPN on my MBA. Is there a way to do that with a jail broke ATV and a time capsule?

If you're willing to jailbreak( only on atv2 for now), Plex will allow you to access your media files from anywhere over the internet using your MBA.

See my post on Plex and roku and adjust as necessary.

You can't use safari on it but this is another browser you can install.

If you have the latest firmware on your atv2, you are limited to a tethered jailbreak for now, which is no big deal.

Go to firecore.com for instructions and software and you should save your current ATV firmware shsh blobs in case you ever need to downgrade in the future. And turn off auto updates in ATV.
