Apple TV video output resolution, help.

I've heard vaguely that Apple TV can do 1080i.

I have a Sony HDTV that is capable of 1080P (natively).
I have hooked my G5 PowerMac to my TV and slide shows look stunning.
I have hooked my G4 mini to my TV and it looks great ... briefly! The TV will generally goto a black screen. I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable.
In both of these circumstances, the Mac says it is driving at 1080i (interlaced). I've read something that it is actually do 1080p.
I was planning on using my mini with the TV, but as said above not very useful.

So ... Apple TV !
The specs talk about 720p @ 24 FPS ....
For a movie this makes sense, but what about slide shows?
Will or Can the Apple TV drive my TV at at least 1080i?

(note: I saw a video of someone booting the Apple TV from USB hard drive. Briefly on screen was something about 1080i)

AppleTV can output 1080i it can not drive 1080p ( according to specs )

AppleTV can decode up to 720p/24 h.264/mpeg4 video

Your pictures will be displayed at the display resolution just like on your mac.

I don't have one... just going off of what others have said/spec sheets.

Does this mean that the AppleTV will detect that my TV is capable of 1080P, 1080i etc. And that it can do 1080i , then select 1080i as it's drive mode?

So the TV should detect that it is driven by a 1080i source?
And, if the AppleTV had a pref panel for the screen, it would say 1920x1080(interlaced)?

AppleTV will do 720p or 1080i. If using HDMI, the AppleTV autoselects the highest resolution possible. If using component video, you as the user select the output resolution.

One of the uses for AppleTV for me is slide shows.
In iPhoto on my G5, I can do a slide show and it looks good on the 20" cinema screen. I'm assuming it uses the screen resolution, but I read something that said some about 640x480 and something else.
What would I see on the AppleTV?
Would it be the same resolution as on my G5 PowerMac?
