Wanting to try an Apple TV again but wanted to know if this is possible. I want to move a copy of all my movies, music, and pictures to a Seagate Goflex drive that is connected to my Airport extreme. Is there a way to have an Apple TV to access this media without having to have a computer running with itunes? Getting rid of the desktop that has been my media server and just have notebooks now and won't have a dedicated computer to run iTunes all the time.

So is this possible or do I need to go another route? (WD TV Live, Roku, etc)

Plex or xbmc won't need a computer to act as a server? It can just use the hard drive?

don't personally use plex, i use xmbc. its totally stand alone when you've got it in place, just tell it where to look network wise, simple enough :)

JB'ing doesn't work with ATV3's yet I believe, only ATV2, if that's what you have you maybe stuck.

plex needs a computer, xbmc does not.

with xbmc you will have a better experience if your files are in an aTV compatible format. xbmc will try to play anything, but the processor in the aTV is built to play h.264 files.

plex will convert files on the fly to the correct format.

So besides having to get another PC to run xbmc on the TV what can I get to run xbmc? Also wanting to have 1080p support so think the ATV2 is out of the question.

aTV2 will run the xbmc, it just shows as another icon. it will work totally without pc after the initial install & jailbreak.

you are correct it won't support 1080p
