Apple TV2 and NAS Drive?

I have jailbroken Apple TV2 and my movies are mainly stored on an external portable hard drive.
I want a way to watch these movies without having to leave my laptop on and connect the portable hard drive to the laptop.

I've been told to use a NAS drive for this.
My question is can I use this?

yeah that's pretty much it. I have a similar set up. you need to download an app that allows it to access the external memory drive and play the contents.
Search the app store for DLNA players - I use one called 8 player. it's pretty good and costs £3 there's a lite version that allows you to get the idea behind it.

Yes that will work fine as a NAS, however to access media on your ATV without a computer on you will only be able to use XBMC or the Firecore Flash Black media player. If you want to access purchased iTunes content you'll still need a computer running iTunes or if you want to use PLEX you'll need a computer running the PLEX media server.

Not sure what mac-attac is talking about as there are no purchased app or even an apps store for the ATV, so you don't need to buy 8player or even use DLNA, just install XBMC on your ATV and point it to your network drive.

I take it I can just unplug the external hard drive and plug in another one should it become full?

I understand obviously if I do this then I won't be able to watch movies on the original external hard drive.

I also guess I can get a 2tb sata hard drive and put this in to the actual storage as well and that way I'd have 2.5tb inc my 500gb hard drive?

With xbmc theres no need for atv flash so you are good to go. I used tav flash to install xbmc and the wife uses atv flash to access the content stored on the nas but thats about it. I like the xbmc interface and plugins it has to offer.

I had the same problem, but what I did is hook up my external hard drive to my Belkin 750DB router and ran it that way using ATV Flash Black and its media player app and it works great. If you have a router with USB ports thats the way to go.

Yep, thats right, the product you linked to is a NAS enclosure with 1 bay, so you can fit a drive inside the case as well as connecting an external USB drive to it.

STOP.... WARNING....

After reading the d-link website about the product you linked to the USB port IS NOT for connecting extra storage to the device, it's for connecting to a computer to use the device like a normal external drive enclosure. So don't buy it expecting to be able to expand it via USB.


If you want one with the abillity to connect USB drives for expansion then try the next one up in the range, the D-Link DNS-320.
