I had to move my Apple TV to a monitor that only has DVI input. I thought it was no problem, just get a HDMI-DVI cable. Afterwards, I discovered the cable didn't carry the audio. The monitor only has 3.5mm audio jacks, and I don't have a stereo that has optical, only RCA and 3.5mm. Any inexpensive suggestions?

I don't think there are inexpensive options. Converters that carry audio are expensive and if you buy an alternative audio system it has to take an optical input, which rules out most cheap ones.

Before I got my Apple TV, I had the same problem as you. I looked at various options and ended up spending a couple of hundred pounds extra and getting a shiny new TV.
