Apple TV2 to Onkyo HT-RC180 ZONE 2?

Ok here is the problem I am having. The receiver, Onkyo HT RC-180 (network receiver) allows for a zone 2 or zone 3. I currently use ZONE 2 in our screened in porch speakers to listen outdoors by the pool. However, ZONE 2 will only play an ANALOG signal. AppleTV2 is digital, I currently have the APTV2 HDMI'd into the PORT setting of the receiver.

The way I play outside now is by using Majestic Media Server. I can access my iMac using the receivers NET input source, it recognizes the media server and I am able to play iTunes stuff on ZONE 2 no problem. The issue i need to resolve is I have to go indoors to change music, playlists etc., because the RECEIVER is recognizing the iMac as a media server. I want APPLE TV2 to be able to serve the media and be controlled from outside via iphone or ipad...

any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

I use a similar set-up and had a similar issue. Have you considered using an airport express and controlling via your iphone and wifi? Might be a simple fix. Other would be to get an older appleTV, they had analog and used ones are cheap- I have two personally I have on shelf because the newer Apple TV allows much better functionality.

The other fix would be integrate the apple tV with the regular inputs and have an infrared splitter to get to the control function to switch zones. I use an integra, which is just a fancy onkyo, I have one distributed audio system set up that way, 2 goes to the ambient music and I control via a pad that allows input changes. Not as smooth as a remote/apple solution, but it works.

If I purchased an original Apple TV, would I beable to primarily use the ORIGINAL only for an analog signal outside and still have ATV2 for the other features?

Yes. That's what I do. Because of this problem, I use my Apple TV (original) as my audio player and my Apple TV 2 for video. Both devices can connect simultaneously to iTunes running on your computer.

My Onkyp receiver only has composite video inputs and the ATV 1 has component... how do you have your two APTV's hooked up?

I have both ATVs connected to my Onkyo TX SR-607 receiver via HDMI. In addition, I have connected the analog audio outputs from my ATV1 to one of the analog audio inputs on the receiver to feed the Zone 2 amp.

It looks like your Onkyo HT-RC180 has all the inputs of my receiver and then some. You should be able to make the same connections. Your Onkyo does appear to have component video inputs as well, so you could connect your Apple TV that way if you wished. In a way, that would be cleaner, since your ATV1 signals wouldn't need to go to two different "ports" on your receiver.
