Currently have an Amazon trail copy band which seems ok.

Are the Apple Original bands much better in terms of quality to justify the added expense?

Yes, they are much better in terms of quality.
A wolven nylon band I bought 4 years ago from Apple still holding strong, while the other cheaper third-party woven nylon band already breaks left and right, unable to be used seriously, despite being purchased about 2 years later and cost half as much.
