I think yes. There were 3 Apple ID's through the years. There was the .mac and then mobile me email address, login, etc. There was the apple ID used in the Apple store web page to track purchases. This was also an email. Lastly there was the iTunes ID which was yet a third id based on an email. I decided to set up my phone by telling it my icloud id is my mobile me id. Somehow it decided to let me keep all the stuff I bought using my iTunes id which is different. At some point, when I have a lot of time, I plan to merge the 3 id's so my apple id and my itunes id are one and my mobile me id is ported over to icloud and is the same as my apple id.

It's easy to change, just go to the website Apple provides and change your username to an e-mail address. You can access that page by viewing the iCloud.com website as well.
