Apple allegedly wants trademark protection for a handful of icons that are so general, it's amazing they weren't laughed out of the office.

Among them are simple line-art drawings of:

  • A circle (that's it, just a circle)
  • A 2-lane road
  • A flame
  • A stopwatch
  • A target (3 concentric circles)

See those icons here:

Ridiculous.

It's probably trademark protection for the whole thing - the circle inside that rounded box, behaving as a button for some kind of context.

It's not just the circle. Not as ridiculous as you think.

What MacNN doesn't realize is that these are the Nike+ icons, so their speculation on what the icons are is totally for naught.
