my 2g iphone took a swim with someone and hasnt come back on since. i now have a new to me 3g iphone. its jailbroken and unlocked with gevey turbosim (i didn't have my mac handy and used windows and inadvertantly upgraded the baseband...ugh)

Well anow that i have done the jailbreaking and unlocking and downloading all my apps both apple and jb i have noticed that the camera button is greyed out. shutter comes on i can go to camera roll i just cant go to the screen. i looked up my serial and it says i'm still under warranty. Apple store says they cant say if its hardware or software without booking a genius bar appointment.

i know JB breaks the warranty BUT if i backup the iphone with itunes, and do a reset on it for my trip up to the apple store, when i restore from my backup, will i have everything back exactly as it was including cydia apps?

do i have to repay to download apps i already paid for, like one of the remote apps i bought?

can contacts be extracted from backup files? (im visiting fam on vacay, and want to get contacts that weren't saved to sim when i get back.. but i don't think i want to fully restore it to mirror my 2g. starting over clean...)

Sounds to me like a software issue. I've never seen it freeze on the shutter screen. Problem is Apple will want to restore your phone to factory settings with an AT&T account to see if it's a definite hardware issue. If you unlocked your phone a restore/update might brick your device and render it unusable at all. First thing I would try is going under your Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset all settings(DO NOT erase content and settings!) and see if that fixes it. If not I'd say find out if you can restore it yourself without causing harm to the device and still be able to use it unlocked or jailbroken.

Tried a a reset settings but no dice. I remember seeing it greyed out before I jailbroke it but it figured at the time it was because I hadn't exactly activated it yet.

It doesn't freeze tho, the icon will rotate for landscape mode, I can go to the camera roll and evrything. I just can't snap a pic and it keeps a black screen in the viewfinder

Anybody know if there's a way to check 4 hardware failure? Has anyone even heard of a camera hardware failure? I googles and saw similar reports as mine but no solutions

Bump.

No one has ever had a greyed camera button?
The shutters open but the screen stays black, the cam Icon even rotates for landscape mode, and even camera roll works
