OK I've got a new iPhone recently and need a watch. Now I can get the SE (a month old) or the 5 (couple of years old and £25-£30 more) both same condition pretty much, and was wondering what people would go for.

I don't think the always on display is a deal breaker and the newer watch will clearly last me better in the long run.

Is this a daft question and do I just go for the newer SE?

I‘d go for the S5 anytime if it‘s in good shape. AOD is something you miss, as soon as you get used to it and ECG is also nice to have.

SE. You might be looking at a battery replacement not too far down the road with the 5 (what if-ing here), and depending on what the used price you are getting, might skew things into cost of a new watch territory.

Month old SE £140 2 year old watch 5 £165-170 ish

Yeah battery would be my concern too.

The SE has the older sensor and stuff, so that’s a trade off.

I have an SE and I love it,
but if the S5 battery is good then for that price difference I think I’d take the S5.

Without the opportunity to check the battery I’d take the SE.

...thanks...I think...basically the SE is still very good but if I find a good battery health S5 then go for that but if not then the SE...haha

Those are two very different contenders, search for a bit longer, you‘ll probably find a much better in shape S5 and then that’s the one you go for.
I couldn’t get myself to buy an Apple Watch without AOD anymore. The SE basically a stipped down S5, who would want that? ;-)

Given the price difference between the two, and the battery difference between the two, then I would say that if you're planning on keeping the watch for 18-24 months, get the SE.

If you're planning on shorter than that, 6-18 months, then get the S5.

Another thing I would check is if either of them have AppleCare.

The SE is still under repairs and service until 3rd of Feb next year neither have actual applecare
