Anybody else envious of Samsung watch faces? Apple Watch faces just don't have any real Classic looking watch faces to select IMHO
Agreed, though Apple is very anti-skeuomorphic these days, so I wouldn't expect any "photo-realistic" classic watch faces.
But I know what you mean...

I actually really like the way Samsung has implemented their watch store with purchasing watch faces. There is a huge variety and even though some of them are not appealing to me, it's diversity what makes themunique with all the different options. I still have hopes one day Apple will expand into something like this with the Apple Watch, as I think this is highly desired by many.

I'd definitely pay for the ability to customize or change up my Apple Watch if I could - or size things down and add more widgets or what not.

And this is something that Apple really should expand upon. The watch faces they currently have are great and they really do suit nicely. But they need more customization, as that's what makes the Apple Watch really special. The two biggest factors that really separate the Apple Watch to make it your own, it's customizing the bands and watch faces.

It would be an ideal feature but I don't think Apple will "open the gates" to allow face watches to be customized or for developers to create them.

Apple should at least make the Nike faces available even if they charge a $1 or 2 for them.
If they don't want people to make faces because they don't want a bunch of fake Rolex faces they should license certain developers to make faces.

Apple needs to at least put some nice looking adult faces on the watch instead of the kid faces like Toy Story or Micky/Minnie. IMO the kaleidoscope is a useless feature.

My son has a S3 Frontier and he has all kind of nice faces that he switches between.

You're probably correct about Apple not allowing developers to have complete access. But I still would like to see Apple have some sort of type watch store or at least in the slightest implement a variety of more watch faces that have more depth to them.

They may allow developers to create it but not anytime soon, perhaps 3 years from now with a whole branding initiative of "New Model , Customized Face Watch for the price of $800" ;-)

Would love some kind of store to download and buy watch faces for the apple watch. Hopefully apple delivers some day.
About Samsungs "classic" watch faces I'm not a fan. It just never looks good imo trying to look like something it's not. Kind of like having those fake tiles or wooden floors that are just plastic and flat.

If Samsung made a laptop that looked like a 1950's typewriter, would you also be envious?

I'm using the Solar face on my watch 90% of the time, it perfectly encapsulated the appeal of the smartwatch for me, while at the same time perfectly encapsulating time (of day) itself. I definitely wouldn't want my Apple Watch to look like some pretend steampunk.

The diversity of the faces isn't too bad but there is still one thing I don't understand and really bothers me. Why on Earth create a square watch and use almost only round watch faces, I really need something like attached.

Why only limit the really good looking faces to the Hermés model?

Much of a watch’s visual identity comes from its face, and Apple’s designs are very Apple-esque. I’m fine with them.

Same here. There isn’t a digital display in existence that can play with light like these dials do.

I agree. I'm a fan of nicely crafted mechanical watch faces, too, and I can't imagine anything tackier than a smartwatch with a picture of a mechanical watch face on its display.

I really wished Apple would open up the watch to allow developers the ability to create watch faces. It's such an untapped feature

My Counter argument to you would be that they Apple Watch uses a digital display to create more diversity with watch faces to keep it dynamic. And my mechanical watches become more stagnant to me seeing the same Watch face all the time, even though I appreciate the craftsmanship. But they are also two different segments of watches with technology versus mechanical.

Are these ‘classic’ Samsung watch faces a replica of other existing watch faces?
I’m thinking part of Apple’s reason for not opening up watch faces is copyright issues. Of course, they could monitor that the same way they monitor apps for iOS.

Eh, dont you think Samsung faces a copyright infringement sue too if they didnt use their own design??

Eh, yeah...do you think Samsung cares? They have a storied history of infringement lawsuits (and not just against Apple).

How is that a counter argument, though? The Apple Watch already has several watch faces and Apple slowly adds to them, hence it is already „dynamic“/versatile. Could there be even more? Yeah, why not. Should they ever try to closely mimick existing mechanical watch faces? iMO, absolutely not.

I Agree the Apple Watch faces that Apple has are very good, and some of the best watch faces are ones that launched on the Apple Watch when it was first available back in April 2015. I think what you're seeing is, some are getting to the point where they want to see more diversity other than a Siri watch face, kaleidoscope, toy story, etc.

Complications are a nice add-on feature, but I think when others compare Samsung's watch faces, they see a massive variety that suit almost every type of personality or preference of what somebody wants. I don't think Apple ever get to that point, but I would like to see an Apple Watch face store implemented.

I've been using the Modular watch face. It makes the most sense IMO since it shows the most info at a glance. I tried one of the mechanical watch faces, but it just feels pointless. If I wanted that, I would just wear an actual watch.

If Apple put watch faces up for sale, they could probably make anywhere from $1.99 to $9.99 each and we would buy... if they were really good. I don’t care too much about classic faces, though I love my Hermès.

Take for example the Activity Face with the three rings. If Apple allowed us to make those rings other items on a new watch face. Maybe the rings have battery life, steps, heart rate. That might be a $1.99 watch face I would buy and maybe others would too. A watch face store could make Apple many millions without a lot of effort. But maybe millions isn’t enough.

The Utility watch face became so much better when the series 3 with LTE Explorer face came out. Make that available without requiring LTE for $1.99. People on Wi-Fi don’t even see the bars for signal quality anyway. Maybe that can be steps and the seconds can either be that or something else.

With all that said, maybe Apple doesn’t want to add special watch faces as it might take away the desire for people to buy Hermès,
Nike and future partnerships.

I‘m not against a watch face store in principal, I just imagine it to be a huge clusterf**k when all of a sudden thousands (tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands?) of watch faces are uploaded and Apple has to check every single one of them for copyright violations because the makers of classic mechanical watches sure wouldn‘t like to see their designs being ripped off, and you know this is exactly what would happen on day one. I‘m sure there would also be a few ingenuous, creative new watch faces hidden in the ocean of rip-offs and other crap, but I don‘t know that this would make it worth Apple‘s (or our) while.

But again, in principal, I see your point. I really like the Hermes watch faces and it kinda sucks to have to buy an Hermes AW to get them. Maybe Apple should invite select watchmakers to sell their genuine watch faces for the AW, but I don‘t think many of them would do this, outside of a closer cooperation like with Hermes.

Android, on the other hand, is the wild west where no-one gives a single f*** about intellectual property or copyright violations, least of all the grand master of ripping-off everything and everyone, i.e. Google.
