Hi guys,

I just realised that the biggest and most important watch convention in the world will be taking place during March 19 to March 26, in Basel Switzerland. Baselworld has the worlds most important watch brands all under 1 roof, where they also unveil some of their newest models.

Then it hit me! Apple would be incredibly smart showing off the Apple Watch models at Baselworld, just like they showed off the watches at Colette during the Paris Fashion week.

If Apple does do this, it shows they are taking the watch VERY seriously (they already are), and it is not positioned as just a smart watch.

I would think that the Apple Watch event to show more details about the watch (including complete pricing) would happen before Baselworld, maybe March 10 or 17. Then continue building the hype at the biggest watch convention in the world, and sales would begin just a short period after.

I am sure that if Apple does show if the Apple Watch at Basel World, all eyes will be on them, and not the other big players (Rolex, Patek, AP, etc.), showing Apple is ready to play with the big boys.

What do you think?

Click here to see the Baselworld website.

Apple isn't going to show at Baselworld anymore than it goes to other trade shows like CES. It doesn't participate in shows and that has been a long held policy. Apple will have reps (and "spys") there to be sure.

Also Apple isn't trying to play with the "big boys." Its trying to reinvent what a watch is and separate itself from the "big boys," not join their club. Apple will get all the publicity it wants and then some when it holds its own launch event and the focus will be 100% on Apple, not shared with multiple other brands.

Agree 100%. The last thing the Apple Watch is, is a watch. The watch function will be used as much as people use it on their smartphones, which is 0.01% of the time. Smart watches are barely watches.

Baselworld is in Basel Switzerland, and showcases major watch companies and their new watches.

I completely agree with the first responder.

AWatch will be showcase in Appleworld on their own per the usual show then, eh?

It is the the show or event when everyone in the world / other industries is watching / busy making revisions to their existing products, lol.

From Apple:
"Apple Watch is first and foremost an incredibly accurate timepiece... in addition to showing you the time Apple Watch actually understands what time means to you. It helps you be more productive and efficient. So you can get more out of every moment."

It may be a "smartwatch", but Apple is certainly posturing it as a serious watch. I think it's a bit of a marketing move intended to set it apart from the other wearables out there.

I believe the OP's suggestion is plausible, though I'm not sure how likely.

Trust me, people who buy the Apple Watch, most of them aren't people who wear watches or are serious about watches. Therefore they will be using all the cool functions. Apple can say what they want, most people wouldn't know the difference between a Tag Heuer and a game of Tag. No offense to non-watch people.

I definitely agree with you on that point, but I still think Apple is really making an effort to win the serious watch crowd.
Doing an event like the one suggested by the OP could be a strategy, however unlikely.

and the iPhone is a phone so Apple must attend all the phone trade shows/conventions right? :)

It isn't a bad idea for most companies, but Apple just doesn't do things in a typical way.

Let go of the idea of "winning".

Wealthy enthusiasts don't limit themselves to just one watch, or car, or home for that matter. Most will view the Apple watch as a curiosity, a gadget.

Those who understand Apples watch know it's completely different than a prestigious hand made all analog non battery powered luxury time piece.

In the space that Apples watch belongs to along with other smartwatches, it will be right at home. Amongst its competition it should become dominate by virtue of its Brand strength.

I'm in total agreement with you.

"Winning" the watch crowd is not my idea to let go of. I believe it's Apple's idea.
It looks like they are posturing the watch as a serious timepiece. It's marketing, of course, but I don't think other players in the smart watch field are doing this (pretending to be a "serious" watch) - not like Apple.

The Apple watch, is just like the digital watches of the 70s. A gadget. No offense, I want one too, but not a serious watch.
