Has anyone gotten an Apple Watch to unlock a 5,1 on Sierra DP?
I have all my devices on the DP, 5,1 iPhone and Apple Watch and I just don't see how to enable this.
Perhaps it isn't possible despite Apple BT 4.0 and AC WiFi?

I think this function is not in the dp1 yet.

Yes, of course, but AFAIK, the function is not there yet.
Correct, its not there. But the OP didn't mention anything about being on iOS 10 or watchOS 3, so I was just chiming in saying that once its included in a DP, those two requirements will probably have to be met as well.

If you are talking about using a Mac Pro 5,1 the answer is it won't work. At least not on a stock MP 5,1. You need continuity to do unlocking and to use continuity you need Bluetooth 4. Your 5,1 doesn't have it. You also can't do universal copy and paste on a 5,1 without buying a new Bluetooth dongle.

If you look at my signature you'll see I have that and continuity does indeed work fine.

I have now discovered that in order for watch unlocking to work you need wireless ac. So, if you are not able to get it to work it could also be because of that. In my 5,1 I only have a/b/g/n so, it won't work for me.

If you figure out a replacement card, let me know. All the solutions that involve a combo wifi and bluetooth end up with a USB cord running out the back which I don't like. I would be willing to swap out the wifi card and do a bluetooth 4.0 dongle if that works.

If you don't mind my asking, would you let me know if universal copy and paste works on your machine? I might be satisfied with just getting that working and not worry about the Apple Watch.

Dongles don't work for Apple features, it has to be a native card.

I use a card from osxwifi.com in my Mac Pro 4,1

These are cards that fit the original wifi slot and connect to the integrated antennas of the Mac Pro and run native.

AFAIK, not entirely true, it's all about if you get the correct BT controller. A USB dongle with the boardcom chip inside can actually activate the Apple feature.

It does vary. For example I have a PCI wireless card in my 2,1 that works just fine for wifi (but its not ac). I also know that for bluetooth the dongles work if you choose one of the three that are compatible. I've seen the osxwifi card and it looks like a good solution except for the cost and some of the pictures I saw involved running a cable out the back of the case which bothered me for some reason.

I will probably go with an ac card to fit the original slot and get the bluetooth dongle since I think I can get that at about a third of the price, but it would be nice to know that apple watch unlock works with that kludge before I buy.

Edit: I looked around some more and the osxwifi solution no longer requires a cable coming out of the back, so now my only obstacle is the price, so maybe it's worth it for the elegance of the solution.

Hmm, I just installed Sierra on my 4,1->5,1 and I have a ac-wifi + bt4.0 card in mine and all functions are there. I can activate the Apple Watch unlock feature, but it just stays at "activating..."

Wow, every time we think we've figured it out it appears that there is something else that is preventing it.

I understand the difference, but if AC wifi is also an issue it's likely to be solved by the card in my post. If it's not an issue I agree that all that's needed is a broadcom bt 4.0 dongle.

I know, but he said "Dongles don't work for Apple features, it has to be a native card", which is wrong.

You cannot unlock a 5,1 with an Apple Watch it would seem. Even with the correct Bluetooth 4.0 module and AC WiFi it just doesn't work. The check box shows up under security but when you select it it never activates.
They must block the 5,1 from using the feature.

It works fine on my MacBook Pro Retina 2013 however.

Apple Watch unlock works fine on my Mac Pro 3,1 with upgraded wifi from osxwifi.com. I'm surprised it wouldn't work on a 5,1.

I am using MacID. Seems to have a wider range of functionality the Watch Unlock without jumping through hoops.

I was dumb enough to upgrade to the 10.12.1 beta, beta 2 killed Handoff again. I downgraded, but it did not fix it. Looks like I might have to do a virgin install and migrate, not sure it is worth the hassle. I do use it quite a bit, but am sick of struggling. Meanwhile, Air Drop is working great.

Just swapped out the card with one from osxwifi.com and still same issue. Updated to 10.12.1 Beta2 and also no go. Odd. Going to clean install one last time!

I have been trying everything to get this working. Everything in my system says it should work but it does not activate. I think that perhaps Apple have excluded older hardware even although it is capable of doing it. All the Handoff functions work and according to the system information it should work but it does not.

That is exactly what happens with mine.

Yep, same. Apple Watch unlock definitely does not work without using CAT on a 5,1

Anyone get CAT working on 10.12.x? I have 10.12.3 and every time I use it it causes my Mac Pro to not boot and go into kernel panic. I am using a btle 4.0 USB adapter on a Mac Pro 4,1. Used Bluetooth explorer to recognize it and it works great. Just can't seem to get CAT to work on it AT ALL.
