Yeah, "upgradable" does not mean the same for Apple as it does for the rest of us, the Mac Pro GPU:s are technically upgradable, did they offer any upgraded GPU during the trash can era? Nope. May very well be the same for the nnMP

The important part is the acknowledgment. At the moment they are in a development stage and professional users should get in touch with them as often and as much as possible. If you are voiceless and don't show your consumer power and professional requirements then they don't know what you want, so they aim low like they did last time - which only catered for FCP users. Tell them you are a 3D modeler, or need CUDA rendering, or a part time gamer.

This. The trash can is a gorgeous machine but not suited for professionals who want to keep a reliable machine working by fixing what breaks or upgrading parts that become outdated. That was the beauty of the cheese grater; people are still using it today with modern SATA SSDs and GPUs, but with it being out of production the latter is coming to an end with support for drivers.

Vaporware. Apple has been caught with their pants down. It must have taken some #courage to admit it. I think the situation is worse than we think, considering this admission.

How long until they bring in a revolutionary universal port for iPhones and iPads compatible with every pair of headphones on the planet, no dongles? ;)

"modular" can be quite different from "able to upgrade internally"

Anyway, I can now stop upgrading my Mac Pro (the current setting definitely good for my usage for more than a year), and just wait. I expect they will release something on the Dec 2018. And then decide if I should go for the new one or Hackintosh.

At least they admitted that the trash can design was a mistake! There was so many apologist on this board that kept saying it was a great design. Even Apple is saying it's a bad design...

Ah, the rabbit hole of design. The cheese graters were deemed too big and the trash cans are now too small. So now we may see the age of mix and match, so maybe the logic board, RAM and processors in one box, a box for graphics cards and boxes for drives, allowing users to scale their box size depending on how many processors, cards, drives, etc. one needs. It's been done, so the question is how good it looks.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but after reading the TechCrunch piece, it seems really clear to me that Apple was planning to stop producing the Mac Pro and maybe license Mac OS to a third party for workstation machines. I get the sense that like these network tv deals we always hear rumors about, negotiations fell through and they decided to go back to producing it in house.

Phil said that it won't be available in 2017, because building the kind of machine they're planning on will "take longer than this year to do". Well, what's been going on since 2013? Not a single spec-bump? It was clear in 2015 with the introduction of the MacBook that they were going all-in on USB-C (which the nMP lacks) and the magical ecosystem of thunderbolt 2 devices that were supposed to augment the nMP never materialized. They didn't just come to this realization yesterday.

Just a few months ago Apple got out of the monitor game, and now, all of a sudden, they're back in - but have no info on what exactly they're going to offer. This all strikes me as very suspicious if they were really invested in the Pro all this time.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled that they're back on track and letting people know desktop Macs aren't dead, but this seems like the result of an internal war where the side in favor of ditching the line was calling the shots, and all of a sudden, something happened that caused them to reverse course.

Great to hear that they still give a ****.
But I'm not holding my breath anymore.

This news gives us a little bit of hope at least. The reality is they just changed the sku for the trash can mac pro. It's not a parts upgrade and we won't see a new mac pro this year. The imac will just not work for me.
