So I bought my 12" Powerbook G4 about a year ago. Having owned 2 previous Apple computers I know that you can purchase Applecare up to a year after you get your computer and Apple even calls you to remind you of this.

So, the beginning of this month I start getting "the calls". Unfortunately I didn't have the money at the time so I decided not to. Shortly after, payday rolled around and I was sorta glum that I had the money but Applecare was not to be. Then the phone rang! To be honest I had no idea when I purchased my Powerbook but Apple called me yet again and I bought the Applecare on February 8th. Not only that, they called me twice thereafter (at a guess, the 9th and 10th) and finally I said, "Hey! I already bought it so you can stop calling me!" :)

Last Friday I finally received the Applecare. It's not an amazing little package and hopefully I'll never even need it. So I followed the instructions to register it. Typeity typeity typeity. Click "Continue".

Error!

I can't register it?! My computer is not able to sign up for Applecare?! I call Apple and after talking to a guy I find out that my computer was purchased on February 3rd and since I bought Applecare on February 8th I can't register it. *cry* That I understand... what I don't understand is why they called me on the 8th and twice thereafter to purchase something I cannot use!

I asked to speak to "somebody else" and I did. They're seeing what they can do. Hopefully I'll know more soon. They asked me if I had another Powerbook I could register instead (no!). It sounds like I can get a refund. But that's sorta not my goal. I guess if *I* went crazy and ordered Applecare past the original warranty I could see their point. But the fact that they called me and asked me after my warranty? Hopefully they have logs of their calls because it's just silly.

So anyway... just a warning if you get "the call" from Apple. Make sure you're purchasing Applecare before your warranty expires if you're going to purchase it. Otherwise you'll get to hang out on the phone for an hour or two which is no fun.

welcome to apple's warranty dept. In my experience, the worst manf's warranty money can buy. Nothing is covered, except their own mistakes!

They fixed my iMac G4 when it got hit by lightning for free. They weren't supposed to I don't think but I told them that was what happened. Not their mistake. Unless... the reality distortion field contains lightning... which it might... :p
 
Well here's the deal in my mind. Apple called you asking if you wanted Applecare since your 1 year warranty was expiring. You bought it, therefor you should have it. If there computer said it expired for you, than they should not of called you.

I would call them back, argue your point and get your applecare. I was able to get a repair for free after my applecare ran out. My HD was failing, but only enough to get minor problems, that most of the time I could not recreate. I called them about it, even tho I knew I couldn't replicate the error to report the issue, and they told me to call them back if the issue escalated. It did, and it was out of warranty at the time, and they weren't going to replace it, til I told them I reported the issue before my warranty ran out, and was only following their instructions.

My point is, they told you, that you could still buy it. So you did, and they should honor that offer. Don't take no for an answer. Plus, 10 bucks says they started your applecare the day you purchased it, so tell them you didn't even receive your computer til after your applecare had actually started.

Trust me tho, if you insist, and be polite, and refuse to take no for an answer, you will get your warranty expansion. I will always buy applecare with my products, because no matter what computer I buy components start to fail in their 2nd year. You might not need it, but its really nice to have incase things do start to fail in the products late life.

3 and 8 do look similiar.

Good luck- if your patient, polite, and stick with it I bet you'll get satisfaction. I recently had an experience with applecare that began less than stellar, but they ccompensated me for it.

Yup. I've been polite with them. I always look at these things as if they are "Apple's" fault and not the person on the phones fault. The people I've talked to I've never talked to before so there's no point in yelling at them. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get Applecare it's just taking longer than I had hoped and I figured other people should know to check their stuff out before they actually purchase Applecare lest they be forced to go through the hassle.

Yup. I'm certain that if they have phone records (which I'm almost positive they would) then there is no denying that regardless of my Powerbook purchase date they offered to sell me Applecare past the warranty date. It's just one of those things where I know the facts but they have to verify them and get approval and so on and so forth. It's not like my Powerbook is inoperable until I get this resolved so... I can wait. :)

The main point of my thread was to let people know that if you're going to get Applecare, waiting for "the call" might not be as hassle free as you'd hope.
 
I never got applecare for my ipod (3g 15gb), and the battery started to fail 4 days from the end of the warranty. So I sent it in just in time, and received a refurbished replacement. It didn't work, all the songs had weired digital beeps and static, so they sent me another one even though I was out of warranty. Now my Ipod is dying again, and I can either pay $79 to replace the battery or I can wait it out until April when they will hopefull announce a new Ipod (I am doing the latter.) My question is, this April, I also plan on purchasing a macbook, so would you, after your bad experiance, still recomend buying applecare for my new ipod and macbook?

The problem in this question is not Applecare as a whole, but that there is a problem with applecare warranty signup if you wait til the end of your first year. I have always purchased my warranties with the product when I buy it, and it makes things so much easier as you can avoid the hassle of signing up later. I have never had a problem with the Applecare service, its a great idea to get it especially on a computer or monitor.

On the other hand, I wouldn't get it on an iPod. Those are easily replaceable, and new versions come out all the time. If mine died, it would be a good reason to upgrade to the next version. But, I have a Rev B iPod and its still going strong.
 
Well I called them this morning and I'm not sure what went on but anyway they registered the computer for Applecare... didn't really hear if they made a mistake in calling me past the date or not but... wheeee...
