In the other poll about loving your macbook, I read how some people will start threads about negative things happening to your MBs/MBPs. People won't write about how everything is going well.

In light of that, I'm wondering what people's thoughts were on AppleCare. If there are more people who are happy with their MBs/MBPs then do you regret getting the AppleCare (if you purchased it)?

Absolutely, it just paid off!!! Apple is replacing my motherboard and other associated items. I am not happy that I had to use it, but thrilled that I had it for this exact situation.

I havnt gotten it for any of my apple compters, and have never needed it yet. Hopefully it stays that way, sometimes it would be nice to have it just for the assurance however.

I have it, and I use it. Sending the laptop in to get a new logic board this week. Now the 2 hours I spent on the phone with apple to get it sent, that did not make me too happy.

I didn't get it on my iBook - I bought the computer in Florida when they couldn't sell Apple Care. I had planned to buy it in CA - but with the stress of moving and crap, i never got it done.

I highly regret it - it has a trackpad that needs to be replaced. It would have run out last month - and that is the only issue (other than the stupid keys on the keyboard with no letters left on them  ).

But, it would have been nice to have a track pad that wasn't possessed.....

Now that they can sell AC in FL i don't have the issues as before....

I bought two G4 PowerBooks at the same time, one for me, one for family. As an experiment I got Applecare for one and not for the other. The one I didn't buy it for is fine and has been for several years. The other one had a disk drive and a screen replaced about two years after I bought it. So I just got lucky I guess and saved about $800.

I bought a Mini iPod for my girlfriend but didn't get Applecare. It died about two years after I bought it. True, it was used heavily, but I wish I had gotten the Applecare. I replaced it with a new Nano and if it dies in the next three years, which seems likely, it'll be under warantee. When I bought it I had to ask for Applecare. Thought that was interesting. Maybe they expect that it's going to die and don't want to be on the hook for as many units as they would be if they were pushing the extended warantee.

I never bother with it. I buy my macs from John Lewis in the UK as they come with a 2 year warranty. Over the last 7 years I have bought three different macs and never had a problem with any of them.

i have never ever understood apple care, what is the point in getting a care plan which only covers any manufacturers defects for an extra 2 years when for the same price (and sometimes less) you can get an independent insurance plan which covers accidental damage etc. covering apple care and extending way beyond it.

for those in the uk this is the company that i use http://www.cusc.co.uk

I'm with you on that. I found out about that after I paid a crazy amount for my manufacturer's warranty on a VW GTI and found out.. holy cow, you can pay a fraction of that for the same product through a different company. Turns out, those insurance plans are available on most things you can buy.

i was an applecare warranty tech and i worked for an applecare warranty business (ironically owned by michael dell in texas)

never did we have to fix a mac, in all of central california from the coast to the nevada border, in the year my boss was there

so i can say macs are far more stable than the pc lot...we fixed plenty of dell machines

of course, we did not serve the larger bay area or los angeles metropolitan district, but i am sure macs were far more reliable than the pc world

but that's from official repair calls and doesn't mean that mac users didn't come across issues that they eventually fixed themselves

personally, since using an apple II in the 1970s until now, 2007, i have never needed applecare, not once....but then again i am a former warranty tech, as mentioned already, and former phd computer engineering student :)

That's a new idea to me, and I'd like to know more. I'm curious whether either of you has ever filed a claim [i.e., did you ever receive a benefit from this insurance you're describing?].

How does the process of convincing your insurer to pay you for a computer repair compare to getting service from AppleCare, in terms of the time and effort asked of you?

I always buy my computers with my visa platinum card - most gold and above offer this service. That gives me, for free, one extra year warranty. After that, if I still want, I can add three more years for under $200. The extended coverage covers everything that Apple's first year warranty covers and also:

- has a no lemon policy which replaces the computer if it needs repair for the same issue three times.

- has lightning surge insurance

- allows you to take it to any repair facility, including Apple, to get it repaired

- gives you the option to get a replacement if the repair costs are going to be more than 75% of the original value ( I think that's the number, but not sure).

- Never questions you or implies that you were responsible for a problem

I've used this service on many occasions and it's always been amazingly great - great service, fast reimbursements and NO hassle. EVER!

Given my recent poor experience with Apple products, out of principle I refuse to pay Apple any more money to cover repair in the long run because of shoddy assembly, low quality parts etc. I also feel that for the high price we pay for MBPs and other high end systems from Apple, we should get three years warranty automatically.

why don't we all just do this (assuming we can get gold cards)?

Ever since my Powerbook's hard drive failed and I had to replace it, I've bought AppleCare for every Mac I own. I like the peace of mind that comes with it.
