I create extended warranty programs for cars. I know how features are priced into extended warranties.

But computers involve a lot more phone support and is not the same kind of hardware as cars.

I've also been involved with extended warranties for other electronics. Trust me, repairs are, by far, the biggest factor in pricing these. You might want a less expensive AppleCare but it isn't going to happen.

I'd argue that we actually need a more comprehensive AppleCare.

We need, IMHO, an option for next day, or even same day, on-site service & part replacement. The lack of such a warranty is damaging Apple's progress in businesses outside of its core market.

Actually, the cost of phone support is one of the biggest expenses in Applecare. The cost is just averaged over the term of the coverage. Taking out the phone support would make it a little cheaper.
