I can hardly believe it, but I'm coming up on one year of owning my aluminum IMac. I still love my IMac and have really enjoyed it! I am trying to decide if it's worth buying the Applecare warranty. I'm not big into buying extended warranties. Quite honestly, I typically hope to get about three years out of a computer before moving on to the newer technology.

What do you think, worthwhile purchase?

b/c the iMac is an all-in-one, i think applecare is definitely worth it.

you can't just open up the machine and replace bad parts easily. AND b/c of it's all-in-one design in my opinion I think that makes it an increased risk for something to go wrong

I went ahead and purchased Apple Care for my iMac when I purchased it in January. I am taking the mouse into the Apple Store tomorrow because when I wake the computer from sleep mode the mouse isn't reconnecting properly. First issue I have had with my Mac, but I purchased the AppleCare because it is an all in one system and you never know.

Get the AppleCare, you will sleep better.

Fast forward to day 366 of owning your iMac.

The screen goes out- you willing to pay $700 or more to fix it?
Logic board fries - you willing to pay $700 or more to fix it?

For an all in one, I say buy it. I did for mine.

The good thing in Portugal is that we have 2 years of guarantee is obligatory for law for every product. :D

Definitely. I agree with imac123. AppleCare for the All-in-one iMacs is a must.

Same here. Get AppleCare. It's an All-in-One machine, and if you want to protect your investment for at least three years, it's the way to go. Besides, AppleCare for iMac is cheapter than AppleCare for MacBook. If I'm not mistaken, you can even have on site support depending on where you live.

Search the forums... Please! There's a billion and fourteen threads full of people asking "OMG LOL SHUD I BUY APPL3C4R3 LOL OMG K THX?"

Yes, buy it. If you don't and something breaks, you'll be paying for it out of pocket. Don't whine if you buy it and your computer never breaks. At least you had insurance in case something broke. Don't whine if you don't buy it and your computer breaks.

I see what everyone here is saying because I just purchased my first Mac in April and it is an iMac and it would make sense to get the extended warranty because it has everything built in.

can your buy applecare for the iMac after your purchase it? Is there a time window you buy it after you have made your purchase of the iMac?

Thanks in Advance

you can buy applecare any time during the first year.....just don't forget and try to buy it at 1 year + 1 day !!!!

If you buy the Applecare plan with your iMac at the online Apple Store you do not need to register it right ? Thanks

I think you still need to register if you buy form the Apple Store (Web). If you buy over the phone, the rep can register the machine right away.

i bought mine with my AMEX so there is 1 more year additionalwarranty. Is that worth it to get the applecare ?

I had thought that when I purchased my iMac from the Apple web store that the AppleCare said it was auto-registered, but I don't see it listed under my registered systems, and my AppleCare box does say "Register now to activate."

I had wondered how they were going to register the AppleCare with the system automatically considering that they shipped the AppleCare box before my custom system was built. :)

Fortunately, registering it online isn't painful, so I'll get it taken care of well before the one year clock is up.

I did check the text of the Applecare plan and it seems that whenever you buy the plan (either on the web or in the Apple Store) at the same time of the iMac/MacBook etc., your plan is autoenrolled meaning you do not need to make any registration :)

The auto-enrollment works only if the AppleCare Plan (APP) is purchased together with the Mac. If you already own a Mac and go buy APP from Apple web site, you'll need to wait for the serial number to arrive, and then register it. So it helps to order at least one month prior to the one-year anniversary to give yourself some cushion time. Another option would be to order over the phone. YOu can check with the rep over the phone, but I think the registration is done right after a phone purchase.

The additional warranty will have to be handled by AMEX. It might become tricky when they are mutiple issues, and it's better to have the Mac replaced. Also, AMEX don't offer phone support if you need it.

I bought AppleCare for my Alu iMac for $87. I've already received a replacement mouse (though I suppose I didn't need AppleCare for that yet, since I'm still in my first year. I also have something messed up with my screen. But since I have AC, I'm not in a hurry to deal with it. When it really starts to bug me, I know AC will take care of it completely.

With AppleCare, you also qualify to receive on-site repairs on desktops if you're in a covered area. I think only the most remote rural areas aren't covered. With the Amex extended warranty, you'll have to take the iMac to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to get an estimate and then submit the claim.

beware with the 2 year warranty mandatory in portugal

this is only valid if there is not a different agreement otherwise, wich is what happens when you buy an apple product that is publicly offered with 1 year factory warranty, wich they all are, at least in apple pt website...

after the 1st year, if u have any issue with an apple product in portugal, you will be told your warranty has expired

if u start with the consumer conscious 2 year mandatory they will direct you to seek warranty support from the place where you bought it, stating that they only offer 1 yr and anything promised besides that will be handled by the promising entity

Yeah my 2.4 is coming up on 1 yr in August. I am currently shopping for a good deal on it; where did you find it for $87.00 ?? Nice deal! :)
