Planning to swap my Mac mini stock hhd with a ssd. should I keep the hdd aside in case there is an issue with the mini so that I can bring back to apple for a fix? Or should I get an non apple warranty?

Definitely just hang on to the stock drive, I just stick mine in the computer's retail box and put em in a closet. If the computer ever goes in for repair swap the drives back. If it never needs repair you've got the original box for resale plus an unused stock drive for the buyers peace of mind, if it comes up.

Yes, it is a good idea to keep the OEM drive for as long the computer has AC coverage.

why?

is it a question of form?

the new mini has the ability to fly with an external booter.

I am curious as to why you want to put in an ssd> rather then go with an external booter.

I have done extensive tests that show external t-bolt is really good. I have 3 or 4 threads of info on the site. I am doing some tests on usb3 booting just started today while not as good as

t-bolts till really good compared to the stock drives.

I'd prefer internal SSD for both form factor and cost. I could understand doing an external boot if it was cheaper, that's a fine trade off for dealing with extra appendages on the mini. But to pay more money and add more junk connect to the computer? I'll pass.

Thank you for the reply! I think I will keep the stock drive in case the mini failed. The is my first Mac and I will get the 3 yr AppleCare.

Thank you

form factor it is.

as for cost well here are 2 cases

1)if your swap and sell the internal it saves money.

2) if you swap and put the internal into a usb3 case no money is saved.

I do understand form factor and i do not knock it. a clean mini with almost no wires looks good
