AppleCare for MacPro

Good morning!

I know a few of you keep your eyes out for discounted MacPro AppleCare. I am running into my sixth month with my Pro and 2 ACD's I need to grab AppleCare soon.

Anyone have any current cheaper AppleCare vendor ideas for the Mac Pro and ACD- I know that one will cover the MP and ACD and then I need to grab another for my other ACD.

Thank you in advance. Super happy with the PRO - waiting for the Air refresh. Going to grab an 11 for e-mail etc... using a combo of iPhone - iPad right now which just does not get it done. With the MP as the work horse. I also have an old MBP 2.2 that is about 4 years old. Typing on it now :). But this thing is huge. Can't wait till next week...

I actually do this search every few days. Early this year someone found legitimate Mac Pro Apple Care for sale at around $140 I think, but it only lasted a few hours before selling out. I've been looking ever since, but it's never been that low again. The typical low price is $175.

One thing bothering me is that I see two different part numbers. Perhaps someone else can explain that. Anyway, here are the links:

I second B&H. Best price, free shipping and no tax outside of NY state. I buy from them for many years since I am a photographer and they can be completely trusted!!! Also, they have the best prices around
 
Back in January I purchased Mac Pro Apple Care for $143 from jr.com. No tax, free shipping. Totally legit, with box. I had no problems registering it with Apple. IIRC the deal only lasted a few hours.

Of all the Apple products, I feel the Mac Pro doesn't really need AppleCare; it's built to last and therefore I don't really see anything break; odds are if your RAM dies, you'll want more RAM; if the HDD dies, you'll want a bigger disk.

Funny thing is a tend to agree - more worried about my dual ACD's then the MP itself. But at the end of the day for $250 bucks it is worth it. I have both ACD's covered and the PRO (I bought and extra AC for my other ACD) - I have already put in 16GB of OWC Ram 2 SSD's and another HDD that I would replace if something happened.

But for $250 if I use it just once, even for one of the ACD's in my eyes it was worth it. I normally never buy extended warranties on ANYTHING but will be grabbing one for my new Air too. I have had a MPB for about 4 years and the only thing that gave out was the hard drive I installed LOL....

I look at the overall cost and $250 is such a small percentage of the workstation I think it was worth it. PLUS if I sell it later I can transfer it.

I sort of agree, but AppleCare covers all accessories purchased on the same order with the Mac (when ordered/bought directly from Apple), so $175 covers everything. Combine that with the heavy discount you can find and it can tip the balance.
 
I'm concerned about the power supply, and in a Mac Pro, the PSUs are about $100 more than the best price on AppleCare. Seems like an OK tradeoff since AppleCare covers other things. Every workstation I've ever owned has had a power supply die.

Out of the 5 or 6 G4 and G5 PowerMacs my family has owned, only one had a PSU die (after it was knocked over) and the 2003 1.6gHz G5 PowerMac we have is still alive, used every day and rarely turned off, if ever. I did have to do some poking around with it though because it started doing the thing where it would fall asleep then the fans would kick in on full blast, but I don't think that was the PSU, mainly because I didn't have to do anything to the PSU to fix it.

Having said that, I bought AppleCare with my Pro, mainly because I could get a student discount on it so it was almost half price, I think.
 
Difference between MC244LL/B and MD008LL/A?

I have the same question/concern as ActionableMango. I just scored an excellent deal on a 2010 Mac Pro which is still eligible for Applecare. The cheaper it is, the easier the decision to spring for it. There seem to be several equivalent part numbers.

For example, there are 2 versions being sold at Amazon -


MC244LL/B for $ 139

Anyone know if there is a real difference between the two. Has anyone had any success in using/registering the cheaper one?

I remember having this same concern a few years ago with 2 different part numbers being available for the same device. I bought the cheaper one, and did just fine....

Well, I bought an "older" version MC244LL/A and used it successfully for my 2010 Mac Pro. Looks like a great deal to me!
 
Sucks when your logic board burns out at 1.5-3 years though. Can you say 1295.00 for a replacement please?

My 1-year is up next month, so I just pulled the trigger on the "MC244LL/B for $ 139" at Amazon.

It arrived it the mail today. It's the full retail AppleCare box in shrink wrap.

B&H is great to deal with. They're also good for OEM Windows 7 installs if you need to do the Bootcamp thing.

Unless the logic board dies like mine did. Luckily it was 11 months a few days after I bought it so it was covered.... Would have really sucked if it had been a few weeks later.

I have bought many a Mac Pro, and many a Powermac. I always get AppleCare. Pro machines are awful big to keep around as paperweights if they die. Also, it is always nice to be able to sell an older machine while it is still under AppleCare.
