Sure I have. I once took a header on some concrete stairs while carrying a laptop. But the padded shoulder bag protected it, so it came out unscathed. And I do spill drinks on my desk, which is why I always kept my laptop elevated on a raindesign mStand (highly recommended:

Of course, everyone's experience will be different. But, as a general observation, I think it was reasonable to opine that the percent of people who total their laptop and/or desktop
more than twice a year, and who would thus benefit from this change for those devices, is pretty small compared to those who might do so for an iPhone.
Specifically, when you write: "...dropping [my laptop] is a real fear for me and now I can rest just a little easier that at least if I do ever have a catastrophic drop I won't be out my Mac..." that fear would only apply if you've already totaled it twice within 12 months. How many times have you been in that situation?
