I plan on purchasing an IMAC 24" 2.8 in the coming weeks and undecided on Applecare. I am normally not one for extended warranties, but some of the discussions on this forum worry me. What are your thoughts on purchasing the Applecare?

Secondly, any thoughts on the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard. My intial thought is to buy with the wireless. Anybody happy/dissappointed?

Thanks for your help,

New to Imac world.

You have a year of warranty coverage and you can buy Applecare anytime in this period to extend the warranty for 2 additional years. On a notebook, I have Applecare. My iMac also has applecare, but I don't expect to need it. For me it's just insurance. I've used wireless keyboard and mouse, but I prefer wired - I don't have to use batteries.

It'll probably add to the resell value if you ever decide to part with it. Zerox is right, make sure you buy it off eBay so you can get it cheap.

And you should buy AppleCare on ebay.

I just got AppleCare for a MacBook Pro, and I was able to save an additional 25% off the already low ebay price!

Go to live.com and search for "wii". Click the live search cashback link at the top. Now anything on ebay you can use Buy It Now and PayPal with is 25% off!

Can you show me exactly were to find the cash back link please?

Edit: Don't worry, I don't think it works in the UK. But how did you make it able to get money of anything on eBay? From what I see its only proucts on the special live search thing?

I will also buy an iMac soon, so this is interesting.
Until now I was using SONY VAIOs -- their DVD drives have to be replaced
at least 1 time a year!! So I always had that VAIO 3 Year Warranty Upgrade.
Are the iMac's Superdrives more durable...?
But 3 years...?

I'm very much in favor of Applecare on Laptops, since my laptops do work hard for a living. Laptops are fairly expensive to service, and compared to the eBay price of Applecare, I say do it. If I were getting an iMac, I'd probably get it to. I didn't bother getting it on my Mini.

If you're spending thousands getting a Mac Pro, and don't put applecare on it for like, 5% of the cost, I don't see the sense in that.

I recently purchased a 24" refurbished iMac. Like many posters here, I purchased Applecare from eBay for a reduced price. I would recommend Applecare for the iMac, simply due to number of heat/fan noise problems that have been reported.

I realize that many, many people have flawless iMac experiences. I purchased Applecare for the piece of mind that I would be able to get no-cost repairs should something go wrong.

since imac uses laptop parts, and laptops are known for its failure, i suggest u just get one. i thought i'd never need it too. all my previous desktops never had that major of a hardware failure anyway. my imac started acting up 1 month b4 my warranty expires. after a series of really annoying picking up and dropping off to the applestore, they decided to give me a new one. i straight away bought an applecare when the new imac arrives

since the iMac apple care is around $169 (the cheapest apple computer applecare price, no?), and you get 2 more years out of your Mac knowing you are covered seems worth it. im going to buy when i get my letter in the mail in 10 months.

i'm looking at buying applecare for my 11 mo old iMac. what is the part number I should be looking for on ebay?

Do Superdrives work for 3 years without problems?

I've had the 1st Intel iMac they came out with for almost 3 years now and I've never had any problems. But then again I'd like to upgrade next year before I do.

Close, the Mac Mini at $149.

I am a bit worried that i will be ripped off

You can if you want. I wouldn't trust my money with other people via the web and then trust some other company that is known for screwing people over with the protection of my money.

I save eBay for the random crap electronics that I may have a need for, and it's only local, and it's only cash or check.

apple care

i bought the apple care plan for my iBook back in 2005, and that was the best investment i ever made. My iBook crapped out on me 3 times and i never paid a thing. The last statement i had said i had acquired $500 worth of repairs. My girlfriend also bought it for her macbook and when her hard drive crashed they replaced it with a larger one for free. So i yes i think the apple care plan is worth every penny, and i bought it for my iMac that i got a few months ago.
