I've been getting terrible battery usage from my iPhone 3GS. It barely lasts through the day (12 hours at most if I'm lucky) with 3.0.1, and now with 3.1, it lasts 8 hours. My question is, if I take it to the Genius Bar and tell them my situation, will they give me a replacement? I bought my 3GS when it came out back in June. I also have AppleCare.

When I had my iPhone 3G, it would last a little less than 2 days... :(

Also, since updating to 3.1, I haven't received any of my voicemails. I have to manually check my voicemail by calling my number from my cell. I had 7 messages I never received via visual voicemail. Any suggestions on that as well?

Thanks in advanced.

Well, it's possible to get a replacement.

Last Thursday I went into my local Apple store, because 3.1 had hijacked my phone and killed my battery.
The genius ran some diagnostic test, and deemed the battery defective. Now, the 3.1 issues were never actually addressed, but I was given a new replacement. And by new, I mean the serial number indicates it was manufactured the second week of this month.

Not sure about the visual voicemail issues, but the one thing I do know is that this new phone has run flawlessly on 3.1 since I pugged it in to iTunes.

So, yeah, it could happen.
I think that it also depends on the kind of day your particular genius is having.
If it's crowded with people at the bar, you're screwed.

Contact AppleCare and setup an appointment and they'll probably walk you through doing a hard reboot and a backup w/restore, then setup your appointment for a replacement....:(

Well, I've done a restore twice already...to no avail. I just don't want to go to the Apple Store and go through all these steps and then they tell me that this is normal for the phone.

I was at Disneyland on Sunday...my phone was fully charged and took off the charger at 6AM. It was dead at 7PM. I only used the phone to check some football scores the whole day and it died on me. I was so pissed.

Yeah, sounds like you've got a couple issues going on, and most certainly your VVM should be accessible. The battery issue has always caused me to carry a backup battery pack whenever I'm away from a charger. I've had my iPhone get to 4% battery life left on only two occasions....

I don't know how you use your phone, so I can't really say how good the battery is on your phone. I have push on all the time, and I have fetch set to 15 minutes (I would do 5 minutes, but they don't have that option obviously), and I only last about 8 hours. Then I have to charge it and that's fine with me.

As with Visual Voicemail, try removing the SIM card while the phone is off, and reinsert it again and boot it up. If that doesn't work go to the 'Settings' and choose General—>Reset—>Reset Network Settings. If that doesn't work either, I'd give your SP a call.

I removed my sim card, still not getting voicemail. I also did the reset network settings. Doesn't work either. I've googled and checked to see if anyone else has had problems...and there are a few, but most incidents describe a delay in receiving messages. I don't get them at all.

As for my usage...I have fetch on manual since I have MobileMe. I only have push notifications on a handful of apps, mostly to get scores from baseball games. Other than that, I use this phone the same way I used my 3G. In fact, I would have expected the 3GS to have better battery life than the 3G...but it's the opposite.

Well, I made an appointment at the Genius Bar for tomorrow. We'll see what happens.

EDIT: I just did a fresh install. Visual Voicemail works again...but I seriously need my backup data back on my phone.
