AppleCare question.

Okay, so I’m am dealmac.com today and see that some online site is selling the AppleCare for a great price. I purchased my MacBook back in July of last year. I can still purchase AppleCare and all is well. Here is my concern…

I dropped my MacBook about 2 weeks ago . It was in a Small Alley bag when it fell and the right hand side of the MacBook hit the ground. It only fell about 2 feet, I am thankful that the Small Alley bag has a layer of protection and when I pulled out the Mac, it looked like nothing happened to it. I booted it up and it and it came to life with no problems. No dead pixels, everything ran great. This week I noticed that the palm rest area of the MacBook lifted slightly. Not to much but enough to see it. You can push it down but it pops up again. The screen has also start flickering a bit. Not to bad and it only does it for a second or two. I want to get the Applecare for this reason, but my fear is that Apple will tell me they will not cover any repairs because I dropped my MacBook. I know it was my fault. I want to know if you guys think its worth it to get the AppleCare now? Or do you think it is a waste of money?

Applecare just extends your intial one year warantee. if the problem is due to something that is repaired during warantee, then it's covered. If your 1 year intial warantee has expired, you cannot add applecare. Not sure if the drop isa actually causing your problems either, but that's a whole diffent matter.

there's definitely a chance they'll look at it and say it's not covered because it was dropped........so do you feel lucky?

regardless of the drop, i'd recommend getting AppleCare for any notebook computer. if you ever need something fixed, it'll be much less expensive if you have AppleCare (because it will be covered under AppleCare) than if you have to pay for it out of pocket. notebook repairs tend to be expensive - in excess of the couple hundred dollars AppleCare costs.

Yea yea, I would suggest getting AppleCare. As far as whether they will fix your MacBook's current problems or not, we'll, it's definitely worth a shot.

It is still under the original warranty, go bring it in for repair and tell them what the problems are (don't tell them about the drop)...Anyways, if they cover it under warranty, THEN buy AppleCare...Apple only changes it from 1 to 3 years warranty, it doesn't cover anything over and above what the 1st covers..

I think the thing you could do is not tell the that you dropped it. Just tell them that the palm rest pops up and the screen flickers.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll drop it off this weekend and see what they tell me. If they fix the screen and palm rest, I'll go for the AppleCare.

Yeah, I think it's important to consider that you're no better or worse for having APP in this situation. Having dropped the computer would not be covered in either warranty situation, so it doesn't help you or hurt you to get APP with regards to this particular problem. You wanted to get it for the problems which occurred after the drop, but if it's determined that they were, in fact, caused by that event, Apple wouldn't cover them, period.

That being said a) I think you should get the APP coverage, and b) I think you should do as has been advised: take it in, don't mention anything, see what happens.
And let us know what happens, eh?

Buy AppleCare for a laptop without question. Laptops are more prone to fail and unexpected events than desktops. I had a powerbook that used to fail every couple of months; my iMac hasn't failed since I got it last year.

Definitely buy AppleCare for a laptop! I wish I had for my 18 month old PowerBook. Next week, I'm having to shell out a few £hundred to repair a broken temperature sensor (the trackpad/upper case temperature sensor issue), and my warranty only expired six months ago

Update...

I got my MacBook back today, I just picked it up. It looks like it is working with no problems. The tech said it was “Inverter Board”. They replaced it, no questions asked. The screen no longer flicks and we never had the conversation about me dropping it. My only complaint is that they had it for 6 days. They could not have been nicer. I upgraded to the Applecare and now I am covered for a total of 2 years and 4 months.
