I have two MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) models. One I got from an old job that I no longer work at. The other, I bought myself (I wasn't expecting the former).

The one I got from the old job has AppleCare+ for Enterprise, which expires in a little over a month. The one I bought myself just had its initial AppleCare+ expire and I have since renewed it.

For the one that has a little over a month of AppleCare+ for Enterprise left on it, what should I expect when that runs its course?

Will I be able to tack normal AppleCare+ on for the renewal? Will it bark at me and say that renewal can only happen with the business it was released from? (And yes, it is not in Apple Business Manager whatsoever.) Will I not be able to renew AppleCare+ at all on this machine? Has anyone had any experience with this? Would love to know!

Generally speaking, you can only renew your own AppleCare+; it's not transferrable in terms of renewing. But, that's for consumer AppleCare. Not sure what will happen with your AppleCare Enterprise.

It will expire. You can’t extend Enterprise Apple Care+ with consumer AppleCare+. You won’t be presented the option to renew.

I called AppleCare and asked. Their answer was the same as yours. Such a bummer, considering the Mac did have a normal AppleCare+ plan before it converted to AppleCare Enterprise. And I get that businesses generally do not want to keep machines past the 3-4 year mark (5 if they're particularly thrifty). But it's still unfortunate.

Here's a thought: This particular MacBook Pro wasn't originally purchased with AppleCare Enterprise. It was purchased with AppleCare+ and then, about a year into its life, it (and the fleet it was a part of) was bumped up. Might there having been a prior AppleCare+ agreement come into play upon renewal?

I called a second Apple rep who begrudgingly told me that their agreement admin said that it's possible that I'll have the option to buy an AppleCare+ renewal subscription once AppleCare Enterprise runs out, but that neither Apple nor I will be able to predict what will happen (though that I shouldn't hold my breath because the odds are slim).

It's extremely irritating that they don't have insights into their own system and how it works.
