Applecare?

I got a question for you guys. I purchased a refurb iMac G5 last fall. I have to decide in about a month or so If I should pick up the Applecare plan. Its around $120 bucks I think. I have had only one problem with my mac so far, the harddrive died on me and they replaced it with no problems. It was covered by the normal 1 year warrenty. So my question is should I fork over the $120 or should I use it for something else? Your input would be appreciated thanks.

I've found that iMacs are pretty reliable, and I would tend to skip AppleCare for my iMac rather than my macbook pro. However, it's only $120- and if you use it only one time it pays for itself. I'd probably get it just for peace of mind.

It depends on one's perspective. One might say electronic warranties are 70% Marketing costs and 15% the actual cost to replace broken parts. Then the last 10% is split here and there. So basically you are paying for Apple to advertize with buying Applecare. (Though you do that already when puchasing the computer). You're just giving them more money.

Others will argue with the new line of Intel Macs they have been more prone to problems. So they would argue Applecare is more of an investment. Why gamble a 2,000 dollar computer + no applecare? Or, put a little more money in and if it happens to malfunction, you have only risked 300 bucks instead of 800 bucks for that new logic board or whatever.

One of my best friends is on his third motherboard G5 iMac Rev B

One more repair and they ship him a new one.

Yeah you probably right, I should just fork over the money for the peace of mind. I just hate spending money on stuff like that. But it would suck even more if it broke down and I had to pay out of pocket to get it fixed. Thanks.

i loathe it too.
i cant believe im considering it. i never have in my 15 years of macs, bought any xtra warranty.

my rev A mackbook pro on its 4th logicboard may just change my mind.
its either applecare or sell it i rekon, i have zero faith that it will last as long as any of my other macs.

Why is Applecare so cheap for your iMac? I had to make the same decision earlier this year (for my Powerbook 12"), and Applecare would have cost me 3-4 times as much. I decided that I'd not spend 1/3rd of the value of the Laptop for a 2-year insurance that doesn't even cover all of the things that could happen.

yeah, laptops are smaller-more heat prone all in all just more things CAN go wrong with them. And generally those smaller parts cost more to replace for Apple.

I'd recommend getting some sort of insurance for your laptop instead of a warranty.
