You can buy it any time during the first year (before the original warranty expires), so you have lots of time to decide.
I've had mine for about 10 months and I haven't bought it yet, but I plan to soon. I buy extended warranties for all my portables because they are subjected to more stress than a desktop, and are much more expensive to repair. I'm also a magnet for hardware failures....

AppleCare only covers years 2 & 3.
if you buy it before then, you might be wasting your $. if it gets stolen or run over by a truck or you do something to void your warranty, that $350 would definitely help you buy another one.
most problems will probably show up in the first year or after it's older. you can decide on day 364 if it is worth it to you. you may be thinking at that time of selling it and upgrading to something else.

and if you pay for it up front, they have the use of your money for a full year before you can even use the service.
try this: go buy a new car, but tell them you want to give them the full sales price now, but you don't want the car delivered until a year from now.

I did, using the same process. What seller are you using? I purchased from this guy and everything went well. About a week after sending him my info, I received some paperwork from Apple in the mail. And when my PowerBook's inverter board crapped out after the initial 1 year warranty period, I had no trouble getting it repaired under AppleCare.
It's definitely worth it for laptops IMO. Laptop parts can be very expensive, and AppleCare will usually pay for itself after 1 repair. It did for me
I get it, and I use the **** out of it. Any misalignments in the casing, keys sticking, I just do not want to have to worry about anything with this thing. It needs to work so I can get my work done on it.
Apple is legally required to issue you a pro-rated refund on the AppleCare at your request, so this is really a non-issue. (Best Buy and other vendors do this with their service plans as well.)
Here's my story:
I got the AppleCare on my old PB. Replaced the hard drive (took 2 days to ship and receive back), replaced the power adapter (shipped to me overnight). Then my computer died completely, Apple was going to fix it but it was taking too long (2 weeks) so they gave me a brand new MBP (right when they were updated to the C2D!). They sent me my new computer and they refuded the $40 something dollars left on my old AppleCare agreement.
I bought the plan for my MBP too, even though it was a free computer.
AppleCare is worth it! Especially on portables since you can't really fix them yourselves in any way and they seem to get more wear and tear from transport. (Components are more expensive for them too)
Regardless of when you buy it, Applecare acts from the purchase date of your mac. So you will get 3 years, not 4, from the purchase date of your mac.

Applecare on a powerbook/Macbook Pro is a definite necessity. The hard drives/DVD drives/Hinges died/broke constantly on my last 2 powerbooks. The 600 bucks saved me thousands of dollars.
